For a long time now, rhythmic games have been with us for a long time in our lives, having a considerable time in the video game market. There are a lot of examples of these kind of games nowadays but this time I´d like to talk about No Straight Roads. No Straight Roads combat involves listening to the music, knowing when enemies attack and when to strike. Let´s see on this review if No Straight Roads is good enough to play it and enjoy it. on
STORY
In No Straight Roads, you play as Mayday and Zuke, a musical duo who form the underground indie rock group Bunkbed Junction. Although both their hearts belong to the chaotic power of rock, they live in a city powered by electronic dance music, quite literally. Vinyl City is able to convert music into electrical energy, and EDM is the most popular genre and the main power source.
No Straight Roads (NSR) is the name of the governing company which controls this power, and thus also music, and it's decided that EDM is king. May and Zuke want to bring rock music back to the city, but when they’re unjustly booted from a competition that might have seen them join NSR, they start to talk about revolution instead.
GAMEPLAY
Combat is a mix of hack-and-slash attacking and rhythm-based evasion. You can switch between characters on the fly with Mayday's thrashing guitar attacks being slower but more powerful and Zuke's combo drumming being faster but not as hard-hitting. Both characters are well balanced and it´s feel nice playing as each of them, switching from one to the other when a character's health was low. These battles are themed around different musical genres. In Akusuka, you take on an entirely digital K-pop star created and controlled by a group of geeky teens. In the Tron-like Metro District, meanwhile, you square off against a cybernetic boyband called 1010, whose chrome avatars are actually repurposed military robots.
Bosses, meanwhile, rarely engage you directly. Instead they keep their distance, unleashing lengthy strings of attacks that look impressive, but mostly involve you standing in the right place and waiting for an opportunity to get in a couple of hits. Using the music’s beats and rhythms to dodge and occasionally parry attacks is enjoyable, but the game and the soundtrack only sporadically intertwine,
PERSONAL THOUGHTS
If you like rhythm games I think this could be your type of game, the truth is that it knows how to mix action with rhythm well, having very good visual aspects, it is a game that undoubtedly exudes a certain very attractive charisma. No Straight Roads is a very pleasant surprise this year that is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Do not hesitate to give it a try if you have a chance, as it is a very fun game.
