Until very recently, I found out that Netflix was putting quite a few millions into making an animated series of one of my favorite stealth video games. Splinter Cell is one of those sagas that will never get old for me, and every now and then it's always good to know that there's still Honey, at least enough to make an animated series out of it.
Well, Netflix has shelled out millions, hired a couple of veterans, including the very mastermind behind John Wick, and put them in charge of the revival (in a different format) of this saga. From what I've seen, there's plenty of reason to pay attention to Agent Sam Fischer's missions in the future.
And the story has some pretty interesting jumps!
From the first episode, the series makes it clear that Sam Fisher is no longer the young, cold-blooded man we met in the classic games. He's now a weary veteran, his body covered in scars and his gaze lost in space. He lives far from operations and anything resembling stealth, until Zinnia McKenna, a young agent, appears and drags him back into the world, and blah blah blah, you know the rest.
I felt strongly that this series could be part of some sort of resurrection of the character. The animation is good, reminding me a lot of what I saw with Castlevania, and it also incorporates some details that made me think a lot about Arcane. The series is bringing all of that together while trying to create its own style. It looks good, but the essence of the games ends up being a bit diluted.
Fans of pure stealth have mixed feelings. The series is called Splinter Cell, but it often feels more like John Wick with gadgets. There are chases, hand-to-hand combat, explosions, and fewer of those moments of pure tension where you waited silently for the guard to pass. The action is a 10/10, but I feel like it doesn't really relate to Splinter Cell.
Perhaps a paradigm shift would serve to breathe new life into the series. Sam Fischer would no longer be the young professional who expected the guards to walk right past him, but instead have many more gadgets to complete missions without using stealth, or at least not using it too much. It's also difficult to make an animated series about stealth operations, with no tension other than that stealth.
I had a good time anyway. I haven't finished it yet, but I think the first few episodes give the special ops agent a new lease on life. I hope this is just a teaser for some new video games in the future. Who knows, this is what will ultimately spark interest like it did. He did with other video games.
On the weak side, the series has some pacing issues. There are episodes where the story feels too long, or where conversations drag on without much sense. Some supporting characters also fall short: McKenna, for example, starts off strong but ends up fading into Fisher's shadow. I also miss a bit more "pure" espionage.
I would have liked to see this series in the style of Knives Out, but I'm satisfied with what we have now. I hope to see more episodes, and I take this opportunity to recommend it.

Hasta hace muy poco me enteré de que netflix estaba poniendo bastantes millones en hacer una serie animada de uno de mis videojuego de sigilo favoritos, Splinter Cell es una de esas sagas que jamas se me van a quedar anticuadas y siempre cada tanto es bueno saber que aun hay cariño, al menos para hacerle una serie animada
Pues Netflix ha soltado los millones, ha contratado a un par de veteranos en ellos el mismisimo cerebro detras de John Wick y los ha puesto a cargo del revival (en diferente formato) de esta saga y por lo que he estado viendo tiene bastantes argumentos para que se le preste atencion a las misiones del agente Sam Fischer en el futuro
Y la historia tiene algunos saltos bastante interesantes!
Desde el primer episodio, la serie nos deja claro que Sam Fisher ya no es el tipo joven y frío que conocimos en los juegos clásicos. Ahora es un veterano cansado, con el cuerpo lleno de cicatrices y la mirada perdida. Vive lejos de las operaciones y de todo lo que huela a sigilo, hasta que aparece Zinnia McKenna, una joven agente que lo arrastra de vuelta al mundo y blablabla ustedes se saben el resto
Me dio mucha impresion de que esta serie puede ser parte de una especie de resurreccion del personaje, buena animacion que me recuerda mucho a lo que vi con Castlevania ademas de que integra algunos detalles que me dejaron pensando mucho en Arcane, la serie está juntando todo eso mientras intenta imprimir un estilo propio, se ve bien pero la esencia de los juegos termina diluyendose un poco
los fans del sigilo puro tenemos sentimientos encontrados. La serie se llama Splinter Cell, pero muchas veces se siente más como John Wick con gadgets. Hay persecuciones, peleas cuerpo a cuerpo, explosiones y menos de esos momentos de pura tensión donde esperabas en silencio a que el guardia pasara. La accion es un 10/10 pero siento que no se asocia demasiado a Splinter Cell
Quizas un cambio de paradigma sirva para darle nueva vida a la saga, poner a Sam Fischer ya no como el profesional joven que esperaba que los guardias pasasen de largo sino que ahora tiene muchos mas gadgets para cumplir las misiones sin utilizar la herramienta del sigilo o al menos no usarla demasiado, tambien es dificil hacer una serie animada en torno a las operaciones en sigilo, sin mas tension que ese sigilo
Me la he pasado bien de todas formas, aun no me la termino pero creo que los primeros capitulos le dan un aire nuevo al agente de operaciones especiales, y espero que esto solo sea un abrebocas para que en el futuro veamos algunos nuevos videojuegos, quien sabe si esto es lo que termina disparando el interes tal como lo hizo con otros videojuegos
Por el lado flojo, la serie tiene algunos problemas de ritmo. Hay capítulos donde se siente que la historia se estira demasiado, o donde las conversaciones se alargan sin mucho sentido. Algunos secundarios también quedan a medio cocinar: McKenna, por ejemplo, arranca con fuerza pero termina diluyéndose en la sombra de Fisher. También se extraña un poco más de espionaje “puro”
Me hubiese gustado ver esta serie al estilo Knives Out pero con lo que tenemos ahora me siento satisfecho, espero ver mas capitulos y aprovecho para recomendarla
