Track & Field is an Olympic-themed sports arcade game developed by Konami and released in 1983. Konami retooled the game for release in America on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987.

A very popular game among NES players, this is the most well-liked of all the sports-themed NES games because of the fun 2 player games it contains.

The Story

The ultimate in head-to-head sports competition. Play against the computer or 2 player in 8 Olympic events. There's the 100 meter dash, the long jump, hurdles, javelin throw, skeet shooting, triple jump, archery, and the high jump.

The Graphics and Sound

The colorful graphics are kind of cute, and while being somewhat simplistic, they give you a decent overall view of what is going on.

The crowd sounds are okay as well, giving the NES sound chip to show what it's capable of. The choice of music is odd though. They decided to pick the Vangelis' classic, “Chariots Of Fire”, as the main theme.

The Gameplay

Track & Field is a videogame with a simple, but smart, concept. The aim is to press one button as fast as you can to get good record times and higher scores. Sometimes, a secondary button is used for certain actions. A few times, you will need to precisely do some moves to succeed in the events.

The game has 8 various sports events where you can compete: 100-meter dash, long jumps, hurdles, javelin throws, skeet shooting, triple jumps, archery contest, and the high jump.

On the title screen, you choose to play either mode A or mode B. B seems to be a little difficult. After choosing, you can start with any event you want. In each event, you have to get the points in order to qualify to proceed to the next event. Otherwise, game over for you.

The events are varied. Although, some of them are very similar to the long jump and the triple jump events. The archery event and the skeet shooting event require no button mashing at all and are based on skill and timing rather than button-mashing.

The events mostly work pretty well, but a few like the high jump are poorly made, making the whole event feel not fun. Your character looks goofy when he jumps, and the controls feel weird.

Additionally, while the skeet shooting event is good, it is a little difficult. In fairness, most of the events work well enough, giving the player some fun for the most part.

My Verdict

Track & Field is an arcade game. The button-mashing could be a turn-off, but that depends on the player. Other than that, it is a nice game and one that you can finish.

Replay value is high if played with friends or used as a party game. Track and Field is one of the NES games to collect. It is not the most satisfying sports game but the spirit of the Olympics is there and pulls everything together into a small cartridge.

Go and Play on the NES or emulators with a friend.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!

I don't know anyone here into Esports. It might be good if you can invite some Esports players in this platform to post about it. I plan to be one when I can save enough to buy a good quality gaming PC.
