Mega Gengar ex Deck Product Overview

in Hive Gaming11 days ago

Hi there. In a previous post I covered the Mega Diancie ex deck. This one covers the Mega Gengar ex deck to be released on October 24, 2025.

The suggested retail price is 14.99 USD each. With scalpers going crazy these days, the price of this could easily be at least 30 CAD.

In this product you get a 60 card playable (not fully competitive yet) along with a coin and an illustration rare Haunter card.

Mega Gengar ex Card Profile

Mega Gengar ex is a Stage 2 Mega Pokemon ex. This evolves from Haunter. It has 350 HP, dark typing, 2 retreat cost and Fighting weakness. The Void Gale attack requires 2 Dark Energy to deal 230 damage plus move 1 Energy from this Pokemon to 1 of your Benched Pokemon.

What makes Mega Gengar ex interesting is its own ability. Shadowy Concealment activates when 1 of your Dark Pokemon is Knocked Out by damage from an attack from your opponent's Pokemon ex. That player takes 1 less Prize card. This effect does not stack when more than 1 Mega Gengar ex is in play. Prize denial is a powerful effect which makes your opponent work harder for the win.
The downside to this ability is that the opponent could play non Pokemon ex for Knockouts.

Photos Of Some Key Cards

As decklists cater to more of the players, I show photos of key cards in this deck.

The cards above are staple cards except for Risky Ruins in pretty much all decks now. Their counts may vary between decks but these are common.

Dawn, Grimsley's Move, Punk Helmet are unreleased cards at the time of writing. They appear in Phantasmal Flames set in November 2025. Proxy image cards are shown.

The Dark attackers in this deck outside of the Gengar evolution line are okay. Toxtricity is a really good non Pokemon ex card as it provides Dark Energy acceleration from the deck. I forsee this as a metagame changing card.

Good Parts Of This Deck

Like the Mega Diancie ex deck, the Mega Gengar ex deck provides a lot of useful Trainer cards that are staples in many decks. Lillie's Determination, Boss's Orders, Arven and Iono are good. Nest Ball, Ultra Ball, Rare Candy, Buddy-Buddy Poffin and Night Stretcher are good staple cards found in this deck.

The attackers in this Mega Gengar are not as awful compared to the Diancie deck. Mega Gengar ex could be a good deck archetype in the late 2025 metagame. Toxtricity is very good for Dark themed decks as Toxtricity provides good Dark Energy acceleration. Mega Gengar is not a big attacker but its ability is pretty good.

Bad Parts Of The Deck

This Mega Gengar ex deck is not super competitive out of the box for tournament play. You could cut the Honchkrow evolution line and put something else instead.

Thirteen dark Energy is a bit much. Cut a few for some Tool cards and a Fezandipiti ex.

You can check out Pokecabook Japanese website for some deck ideas around Mega Gengar ex.

Closing Notes

The Mega Gengar ex deck is much more playable than the Mega Diancie ex deck. Around 60 to 70% of the cards in this product are useable for competitive play.

As much as this product is good, the main issues are availability and price. A price like 20 CAD is very good for this. A higher price of 30 CAD is still good as there are exclusive cards in there. If the price goes as high as 40 CAD, then I don't know. It would be better to buy single cards to buy the pieces you need to create a Mega Gengar ex deck.
