Some Players Discovering That Mega Sharpedo ex Decks Are Good

in Hive Gaming • yesterday

Hi there. In this Pokemon TCG post, I cover Mega Sharpedo ex and its deck.

When it comes to decks, there is a Monkey see, Monkey do mentality amongst players. Players typically choose safe decks that are known to do well in big tournaments. If the player is new, choosing an established deck is okay (everyone starts somewhere and start with gameplay first then deckbuilding).

A lot of players avoid decks that are not good or avoid decks that have little big tournament results. These not so popular decks do have a surprise factor that can throw people off. Many players prepare against popular decks and not so much rogue decks.

Because of a former World Champion using Mega Sharpedo ex, there is a slight uptick in this deck's usage.
I was originally typing this before the Louisville regional but Mega Sharpedo ex has found recent success at large tournaments.

Mega Sharpedo ex Card Profile

Mega Sharpedo ex is a Stage 1 Mega Dark Pokemon. It has 330 HP with a zero retreat cost and Grass weakness. It has no abilities but it has two good attacks.

The first attack Greedy Fang requires 1 Dark Energy to deal 70 damage. You also draw 2 cards from this attack.

Hungry Jaws for 2 Dark Energy requires 2 Dark Energy. The base damage is 120. If this Mega Sharpedo ex has any damage counters on it, this Hungry Jaws attack deals 150 more damage.

Combo Cards

Mega Sharpedo ex on its own is a decent beatstick attacker. What makes the deck with Mega Sharpedo ex viable are Toxtricity, Pecharunt ex, Tatsugiri, Binding Mochi and the Judge Supporter.

Munkidori and Gravity Mountain does help Mega Sharpedo ex reach at least 290 damage. This is for the Dragapult ex matchup. Gravity Mountain reduces the HP of Stage 2 Pokemon while Munkidori with Dark Energy moves damage counters from your side to the opponent.

One not so used card in this decklist is Janine's Secret Art. This is for Dark Energy acceleration outside of Toxtricity. Having the Active Dark Pokemon Poisoned goes with Binding Mochi and with Munkidori in later turns.

Note that there are only 2 Stadium cards in Team Rocket's Watchtower. No Gravity Mountain.

This decklist is slightly different. It has 8 Dark Energy instead of nine. There is no Janine's Secret Art. A third Binding Mochi is not here.

Instead of Unfair Stamp, this build uses Secret Box as the ACE SPEC. There are more Stadium cards in this build.

One big Mega Sharpedo ex tournament result is from the recent Louisville regional in the USA.
This player and decklist made it to third place.

It is kind of weird to see 3 Carvanha and 4 Mega Sharpedo ex. I would think 4 Carvanha and 3 Mega Sharpedo ex makes more sense. This 3-4 evolution line is to make finding the Mega Sharpedo ex easier.

Three Pecharunt ex seems to be a bit much. Usually 2 is fine. Maybe this guy wanted more consistency with the Pecharunt ex.

Like the other Mega Sharpedo ex, 3 copies of Judge is fine. The ACE SPEC of choice is Unfair Stamp. A lot of hand disruption here.

Advantages

  • Mega Sharpedo ex Bulky Stage 1 Mega
  • Binding Mochi + Pecharunt ex + Gravity Mountain Combo Versus Dragapult ex
  • Munkidori Abuse + Judge Hand Disruption Options

Disadvantages

  • Grass Decks With Teal Mask Ogerpon ex and Hydrapple ex Still Out There
  • Giving Up 3 Prize Cards If Mega Pokemon ex Knocked Out
  • Reliant On Combo Pieces

Notes

This Mega Sharpedo ex deck and archetype is okay. It is not awful but it is not broken.

I do think this may be one of those decks that get better when the H block cards go away. Grass decks would become weaker and less popular. Less grass attackers makes this deck more viable in the future. You do lose Pecharunt ex, Tatsugiri and Munkidori though.

Thank you for reading.
