Dropped Game Discussions: Kirby and the forgotten land

Not the kind of article I often do, sometimes I don't play enough of a game to warrant reviewing it, but still have thoughts about it I want to share. If you are wondering why it is I didn't finish this game, it's because... I kind of forgot I was playing it for the longest time. And that is what this article is largely going to be about.

I don't expect every game to present a massive challenge or even a moderate one. What I expect out of a game is to at least make me feel like I am having to put in the effort to advance. Kirby isn't a series that has ever had a strong story, and there isn't anything to change that opinion in this game. So what is going to have to carry it is the gameplay, which is not a bad thing so long as it holds up. And mechanically, the game is fine. Plays well, despite the funny name you get some decent fun out of Mouthfull mode, and it's nice being able to upgrade the different powers, adds variety to old abilities.

But no amount of being well crafted is going to get over the fact I felt like I had to put in pretty much no effort to progress. Clawrina was the first time I felt like I had to pay attention to what I was doing, and with everything else, in the game, I felt like I was just coasting by. Nothing about the gameplay grabbed me at all because of this, and with a lack of engaging story, the only thing the game had going for it to hook me was how charming it was. Now don't get me wrong, the game does have a certain charm to it, but it's not enough to make me care.

And in the end that's probably the worst thing I can say about any game I played, I forgot I was even playing it when I turned my attention to something else for a short time. And compared to a lot of other games that had some level of hype, I just don't see people I follow online even talking about it anymore, and frankly, I barely remember anyone talking about it shortly after launch. That seems to be the fate of most Kirby games honestly, people love the character but many games of the franchise just seem to fade into obscurity.

Kirby is so cute, this is a game that I used to love a lot.

Shame. I was thinking of getting this at some point to play with my girlfriend. I'll probably be waiting for a sale anyways.
