Wreckfest is a game of the racing genre, which was developed by Bugbear Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. It was distributed by THQ Nordic on June 14, 2018 for the above-mentioned platforms. This driving game is a sequel to FlatOut which I told you about earlier, which in this case was the second presentation of that game. It is said that it is similar to the game mentioned previously because the plot of Wreckfest is about car demolition competitions; and not only that, but it is also very challenging due to the features it presents, mainly in the damage system that is usually very for a game that is usually purely arcade. It is arcade because it is very simple to play, however it has a good level of difficulty for the entertainment of players who are usually very demanding in this case. For the review of Wreckfest I will take into account the most important aspects that from my point of view are extremely relevant, such as gameplay, physics, graphics and sound.

Bugbear Entertainment Oy is a Finnish video game developer based in Helsinki, founded by Janne Alanenpää in 2000. The company is best known for the FlatOut series and Wreckfest. In November 2018, the company was majority-acquired by THQ Nordic.

THQ Nordic GmbH (formerly Nordic Games GmbH) is an Austrian video game publisher based in Vienna. Formed in 2011, it is the primary publishing subsidiary of Embracer Group. Originally named Nordic Games, as was the parent company, both companies were renamed THQ Nordic in August 2016 after the parent company had acquired the "THQ" trademark in 2014. THQ Nordic's core portfolio comprises assets that were acquired from other developers and publishers, such as from JoWooD Entertainment and its subsidiaries DreamCatcher Interactive and The Adventure Company in 2011, THQ in 2013, and NovaLogic in 2016. THQ Nordic has acquired and established several subsidiary studios, including Black Forest Games, Bugbear Entertainment, Gunfire Games, HandyGames, Piranha Bytes, and Rainbow Studios.

In terms of the gameplay, Wreckfest is about crash races between cars where the player who has the ability to overcome obstacles or other vehicles in the arena where the competition or event takes place wins. All this with the purpose of the one who survives all the adversities that occur in the competition, as it will be declared the winner and therefore may have a greater reputation among the players. The game has two main racing options, such as banger races which are very popular in some European countries, and are races where the winner is determined by whoever crosses the finish line in a certain number of laps. It also includes demolition races which is the main thing in the game, the essence of the game. In addition, before each race we can use the garage to configure our car so that I have a better performance on the track, always depending on the conditions in which the competition will take place.

Normally banger races are three laps away, but this increases as you progress through the game and the more laps, the more in the game and you can have a better performance on the track. In this type of race there is no rule, just get first to the finish line, so much so that you can hit the other participants of the event in order to damage their cars so they are forced to leave the race, of course always taking care of our own car, trying not to damage the vehicle or at least have the least possible inconvenience during the races. For the ease of the players you can activate or deactivate the realistic damages, being the first thing recommended for the real simracing, but if you don't like to play many this type of game but you do it to try it or just for entertainment, because it is recommended to deactivate the damages or put the options in moderate.

Demolition Derby is the main game mode of this video game where the important thing is to be the last survivor inside the arena or court where the competitions take place. It's important to mention that this mode is more American than the previous game mode that was more European, because the latter is more of a traditional race where collisions between cars are allowed, while Demolition Derby has no rules or laps, the objective is to collide and destroy all the cars in the competition, the result being the car that stays on the track either with or without damage that allows it to keep circulating in the battle arena, because that's what it's all about, a war for victory. This mode is always a lot of fun for players. This competition can sometimes be unfair as players who avoid cars and don't fight head-to-head like some do sometimes win, so it's always important to have a strategy in place before events. Sometimes there are special events and also a championship mode, which is the accumulation of points or victories from all the events played.

The game has a multiplayer mode where we have the normal modes available, but instead of playing with artificial intelligence (AI), you compete against real life people, whether they are family, friends or anyone in the world. This mode is always the favorite of the players because it's the most fun to play against real people, because if they give me the option to choose between competing with AI for more difficulty or with people who make common mistakes, I choose the second one. I think that sometimes the game modes are very repetitive in this type of game, but online can never miss. As we perish in this game is not available the local split screen mode, but at least we have the online where we connect in the games through the internet connection, which is why it is vital that players have a good internet speed but that there are no failures, as is the log, where the cars appear and stop the track, usually causing disconnections during the races, which makes lose the race definitively.

Graphically the game is really good, at least in general. Sometimes we tend to notice some details that are not noticeable. In this case Wreckfest has good modeling of the cars, very detailed and realistic. What is damage effects you usually see in races are well represented, the truth is a positive point of this section. Besides, visual effects are present such as smoke, sparks during crashes, flames that come out of the cars when they have a mechanical defect, dust when the competitions are on dirt tracks, among others. The sensation of speed is well represented, even though these are not high speed races, because of the type of competition. The reflections of car racing when the races are in daylight look very much like real life. Anyway, in general terms, the graphics of the game is very good, the developer did a good job, nothing to speculate, but if it fully meets its goal and when I say it's not spectacular, it's because other games of this type are a little better, many more detailed or with better graphics engines, but this doesn't mean that Wreckfest doesn't technically fulfill its mission to provide the best possible visual experience for users.

The sound of Wreckfest is very good, since it has good sound effects, such as the sounds of car crashes, the sound of tires skidding (Grinding), among other things. The sound of the cars' engines is very impressive and more in this type of racing, where there is usually massive participation and this is the case of this demolition racing video game. The soundtrack is very entertaining, where we have bass music from the 90s in the different menus and alternative metal. The most interesting thing is that the creators of the game give opportunity to bands that are not so well known in the industry, having even more merits for the good work they did.

In conclusion, Wreckfest is a fairly entertaining video game in the racing genre. It's similar to FlatOut even though it's older (2006) it's a little better in terms of game modes, as this Wreckfest is usually a bit repetitive, but in the multiplayer mode it's usually a lot of fun, at least in the car wrecking mode. Technically the game is good, the graphics are very realistic, with some minimal details, always seen from the point of view of the user, as there are reviews that are more profound and take into account many more aspects. The best of the graphics is the modeling of the cars, the visual effects, like sparks, smoke, dust and particles from the cars when they crash look very good. The sound is good, it does its job perfectly, and the soundtracks are quite entertaining, where we have two genres, one for the menu with bass music from the 90s and even some from 2000 and for the racing alternative (metal) music. But the best thing is not that, but that Bugbear Entertainment gives the opportunity to small bands, which are not very famous to make themselves known, which I think is important and not only that but they fulfilled widely what they wanted. For what I said before is that I give an 8 in terms of playability to Wreckfest, while technically I give a 9.8 to the graphics and sound a 9.5, because as I said before you can improve some details, but minimum, always from the point of view as a user or amateur player.

For all of the above, I give an out 9.1 of 10 to Wreckfest.

I like Car games with a lot of crashing and destruction. (I'm the type of the guy who intentionally wrecks things with his car in GTA.) So this game seems for me more than actual racing games.

It doesn't seem to demanding for a game released in 2018...

If it is not too demanding in terms of system requirements. Thank you for your comment and visit. Greetings!

playing racing game is really fun. i will defiantly checkout the wreckfest

Thank you for your visit and comment. And if racing games are the best, that's why it's my passion. Greetings!
