After reviewing Shift 2 Unleashed I had the doubt that this would be the first game, since in many cases the second one is usually better than the first edition because the creators of the game already know the errors contained in the first game or even the improvements that need to be made. So this time I bring you Need for Speed: Shift, being a game of the racing simulation genre that is different from most of the Need for Speed presentations that are open world racing (One City Streets) , developed by Slightly Mad Studios for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP, iOS, iPad, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and MeeGo platforms. It was launched and distributed by Electronic Arts on September 15, 2009, for the above-mentioned digital platforms. The game as most of the sagas is usually very arcade, that is to say; easy to play for any user, besides it wins the races easily and with a great margin to the second place, which is usually very tedious for the players who really like the challenges and the difficulty in the races. But this is not the case with Shift as it is usually about circuit racing with professional racing cars and teams. Due to the popularity of this game, it is still interesting even in these times. That's why I'm going to make a review in which I'm going to take the parameters or aspects necessary to conclude the quality of the game, usually expressed in a note from 1 to 10. These aspects are the gameplay, the physics that will not be taken into account because the game is arcade, the graphics and the sound.

As I told you before, the games in the Need for Speed saga are usually open-world races; that is, the competitions take place in a city, however, Need for Speed: Shift consists of races that take place on circuits with professional racing vehicles and teams. Like Two, Shift is a game that is much more realistic in terms of simulation, but it is still somewhat arcade-like, but still compared to racing simulators such as Gran Turismo. Within the game modes, we have Circuit, Sprint, Timed, Duel, Elimination, Drift and Head to Head modes. Circuit mode is the one of traditional races that take place in a circuit, either urban or permanent, where they are done in a closed circuit with three laps, whoever is in the first place when crossing the finish line in the first position in the last lap will be the winner of the event, besides getting some rewards. Sprint is the one where the start and finish line is located, there are no laps but only one run to the end. Duel mode is where you compete with the best car two laps away, in which the player only has to accelerate and arrive in the first place in the number of laps I already mentioned. Chroned you must turn around the circuit three times, trying to make the best time possible, being the best lap of the three the one that will give you the position in the competition. The elimination mode is the traditional one, in which the rider who is in the last position in a certain number of laps, would leave the race and whoever is left until the end is the one who would be crowned with the victory. Drift is where the drifts are made and the one who does it in the possible way will receive an amount of points that will be accumulated to determine the positions. Head to Head is where two drivers compete in a short race, using the same car, with the same conditions which is usually interesting because whoever does the best job actually wins and not because of the conditions and buying parts to improve the cars.

The long-awaited multiplayer mode is also present in this edition of the game. In this mode, players can play a quick game (race), in which there can be a maximum of 8 people using the internet connection; this means that we have the online multiplayer mode. Not only can you make fast races, but you can also play duels between drivers as the normal game mode, only instead of competing against the artificial intelligence, this time it is against real life people, whether they are friends, family or anyone in the world. In short, this mode fulfills its function which is to entertain the players and also to make a community between them, to interact either by sharing doubts, their results, challenging another player, among other things. It is important to mention that if you have a good connection, this mode works very well, with very good fluidity. What I would like is to see more game modes available, they can be even the same as the normal ones and add some new ones for a better entertainment of the players. But not only that, it would be better if more players competed and not only 8 like in this game.

In Need for Speed: Shift a slightly limited number of cars are available compared to other Need for Speed deliveries. Among them are Volkswagen Golf GTi, Mazda RX-8, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Subaru Impreza WRX STi, Nissan 370Z (Z34), Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34), Porsche Cayman S, Dodge Challenger Concept, Ford Shelby GT500, Audi R8, Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG, Ford GT, Chevrolet Corvette ZO6, Porsche 911 GT2, Lamborghini Gallardo,Lamborghini Murciélago LP650, Pagani Zonda F, Aston Martin DBR9, Maserati MC12 GT1, BMW M3 GT2. They are divided into 4 levels, the best being level 4 where we find the super cars, known as Hypercars. Level 1 are average level cars, Level 2 cars where high performance cars are framed and Level 3 where luxury cars are framed.

This being a simulator, it has a certain level of difficulty, as much as in driving, as artificial intelligence. In terms of driving there is the option of activating or deactivating the aids, such as steering assistance, brake assistance, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, manual or automatic transmission and if you want the damage to be moderate or real, which in my case of choosing would be the latter and would deactivate all the aids to make the game more real. Also the AI is very aggressive in some aspects, but for me it behaves very irrationally in several occasions, that's why I say that the game behaves sometimes arcade, but nevertheless the game is more simulator than arcade, so much so that as I said before it is compared to Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo.

Graphically the game is very good. Especially in the modeling of the cars which looks very good and the other visual effects like the smoke coming out of the rubbers when skidding or braking or the sparks when there are the crashes on the track. On the other hand the circuits are very well worked, they look like the real ones, like Willow Springs, the urban one of London or the mythical Laguna Seca. The feeling of speed is very well achieved, so much so that it feels like we are in a real race. We have two cameras, the outside and the inside of the car, both of which are very good at observing details. Another thing that I have been quite impressive is the damage system, which visually are very good, that in many cases in the Need for Speed saga, we do not usually see, so Slightly Mad Studios did an excellent job in this aspect, especially as the cars present the dents and deformations. Anyway, in general, as far as the graphics are concerned, the game is fine, with very few details that in many cases are not usually noticed.

The Shift Sound is also correct where it highlights the different sounds of the engines of the car brands that are present in the game, the sound effects of the cars when skidding, crashing, braking, among other things. As this game is a simulator, the race engineer is available to give us important information during the race, such as the condition of the car and the opponents, the tires, the condition of the track, when there is an accident or when the circuit is free for the driver to step on the gas when necessary, etc. As for the sound of the music is off by default in what is racing, which I think is good because it is always annoying music during a competition, it is better the sound of the engines and the different sound effects mentioned above. What is the Spanish dubbing seems perfect to me.

In conclusion Need for Speed: Shift is a good racing simulator, very little arcade stuff, but if we see it present. The difficulty of the game is good, you always have to make good braking and tracing in the circuits to not discard the tires. Artificial intelligence is moderate, it is very aggressive but sometimes they are irrational manoeuvres. As for the gameplay, as far as the normal mode is concerned it is very good because it has a good variety, however in the multiplayer there are only two modes which makes the player always those two are very repetitive. Graphically the game seems to me almost impeccable with very few details, standing out in the modeling of the cars, the scenarios where the races take place and the visual system of damage that is quite good. The sound is very correct, also with few things to see are negative, the sound of the soundtrack is entertaining, less in the race that is not present. Anyway, both Need for Speed: Shift, and the issue number 2, I think they are good, being the second one a little better, as they improved some details that in this issue I wrote today had some shortcomings (few from my point of view). I recommend you to try it. In gameplay I give it a 8.5 for the multiplayer mode, graphically a 9.5 and in sound 9.2

For all of the above, I give an out 9 of 10 to Need for Speed: Shift.
