Retro Review - Alien Resurrection

in Hive Gaming4 years ago

The Alien saga is not only one of the best in terms of space terror and terror in general, but it also features one of the most badass women in the world of cinema and I'm obviously talking about the one and only Lieutenant Ripley. This character is a maximum proof of the power of a woman and not like they want to do nowadays in almost all kind of products, that the only way to want to make the woman stand out is giving the man the role of bad or stupid, or both at the same time. But that's another matter, today I'll talk about one of the video games that best presents this wonderful saga, but at the same time, it's a rather underrated title.

That's why today's Retro Review is about Alien Resurrection.

Alien Resurrection the video game, follows in detail the same events that happened in the movie. After the events of the previous movie to Alien Resurrection, the brave and badass Lieutenant Ripley dies, having one of the most important sacrifices in the history of cinema, but inside he had an embryo of the Alien Queen, therefore, scientists for several years have been trying to clone Ripley in order to use that embryo to create armies of aliens or also known as Xenomorphs. After several attempts (7 attempts to be specific) they manage to clone Ripley and therefore start producing Xenomorphs for their personal army, but as expected things get out of control as these creatures escape and start slaughtering everyone on the ship. So once again, our heroine will have to arm herself to the teeth to face these Xenomorphs and escape safely from this massacre. Alien Resurrection's game follows exactly the line of its movie, so if you've seen the movie before, you won't have any surprises in this game, but it's still a very enjoyable title.

Alien Resurrection really knows how to create an excellent scary environment, being completely in 3D they knew how to create scenarios with a great level of detail and the recreation of the spaceship we're in is very acceptable, having quite a similarity with what we'll be able to see in the movie.
Being a title of the horror genre the darkness also becomes the protagonist at all times, creating moments of tension even when we are out of danger, but the feeling that at any time we can be attacked by a Xenomorph, is always latent due to the dark shades that we will find in most places we go. On certain occasions such is the darkness that it will make us feel tense and overwhelmed, so that we are always on the alert for any movement or sound.

One of the best aspects of this game is the design of the Xenomorphs, since they are perfectly adapted and designed, having these creatures looking really similar to their movie counterparts, even their movements and animations are exactly the same as the one seen in the movie, that they have recreated this aspect exactly the same as the movie is very important, because we all know how scary and imposing this creature is, therefore it was necessary that they conveyed exactly the same thing in the video game and no doubt they did it very well.

This game really surprised me when I played it again almost 2 months ago and it's because it doesn't have a soundtrack. Just as you're reading, Alien Resurrection doesn't have any kind of melody within the game and that's an aspect that I didn't remember at all and I'm very surprised to realize this. It's certainly a rather strange aspect, since in a horror game I think music is very important to improve that suspenseful atmosphere. But even so, it's thanks to its excellent sound effects that this game stands out, because in this title despite not having a soundtrack, the sound effects we find in our space journey are of a high level and together with its outstanding environment full of darkness and shadows, create an excellent combination that will make us be in tension with every step we take.

Alien Resurrection is a fairly conventional first-person shooter game, most of this journey we'll control Ripley or rather his clone, but in some sections we'll also control other characters, but they're all controlled in the same way. However, despite being an FPS we will also find sections where we will have to solve some puzzle to get to a certain place or unlock some object we need, but yes, most of the time we will be shooting at every enemy we have in front of us.

In Alien Resurrection exploring the different areas will be rewarding because we will find ammunition or some other object that will help us. We also have a large arsenal of weapons, so it's quite satisfying to use the different types of weapons this game has to offer. Although a negative point regarding this title, is that its control is a little bit lousy, because it's an FPS and as a personal opinion, I think that games of this genre should be played with keyboard and mouse, because we have a better control over our character. And in this aspect Alien Resurrection fails a little bit, because sometimes it's quite uncomfortable to move and aim with the control, but it's all a matter of adapting, because then doing that, we can fully enjoy this gem of the horror genre.

Alien Resurrection is an excellent game, which perhaps due to its mechanics is a little frustrating for many people, but it is due to its excellent terrifyingly funny setting, which makes it a fundamental piece of the games of the horror genre.
