En la historia de los videojuegos han existido excelentes consolas portátiles que han demostrado un enorme potencial en el momento de su lanzamiento, produciendo un gran interés por parte de los jugadores en adquirir dicho sistema y poder experimentar la tecnología que ofrece, sin embargo, no todas tuvieron la suerte de tener éxito en esta industria, a pesar de ser excelentes consolas quedaron sepultadas en fracasos comerciales, una de ellas es la GamePack GP2X.
In the history of video games there have been excellent portable consoles that have shown enormous potential at the time of its launch, producing a great interest by players in acquiring such system and to experience the technology offered, however, not all were lucky enough to succeed in this industry, despite being excellent consoles were buried in commercial failures, one of them is the GamePack GP2X.
A pesar de ser una consola que a nivel comercial no fue exitosa, la GP2X es considerada como un culto dentro de los retro jugadores, debido a su excelente potencial para poder emular diferentes plataformas, entre las cuales puede correr perfectamente consolas de 8 y 16 bits como NES y SNES respectivamente, inclusive llega a emular algunos títulos de PlayStation 1 decentemente, esto da a entender que esta consola portátil tiene un excelente software y hardware.
Despite being a console that was not commercially successful, the GP2X is considered a cult among retro gamers, due to its excellent potential to emulate different platforms, among which can run perfectly 8-bit and 16-bit consoles such as NES and SNES respectively, even manages to emulate some PlayStation 1 titles decently, this suggests that this portable console has excellent software and hardware.
La empresa encargada de fabricar y desarrollar la GP2X fue GamePark Holdings, los cuales tenían una sede principal en Surcoreana, dicha compañía ya tenía cierta experiencia con su primera consola portátil llamada GP32 lanzada al mercado en el 2001, pero 4 años después colocaron a la venta su siguiente consola, mejorando varios aspectos técnicos, entre ellos está el procesador, el modelo de la carcasa, su pantalla, entre otros.
The company in charge of manufacturing and developing the GP2X was GamePark Holdings, which had its headquarters in South Korea, the company already had some experience with its first handheld console called GP32 launched in 2001, but 4 years later they put on sale their next console, improving several technical aspects, among them is the processor, the model of the housing, its screen, among others.
El atractivo principal de la GP2X fue su sistema operativo el cual se trataba de una versión modificada de Linux, es decir, de software libre, esto permitía a todo aquel que tuviera conocimientos en programación realizar distintas aplicaciones, entre las cuales destacaron los emuladores, estos permitían ver el excelente rendimiento de la consola, razón suficiente por la que muchos jugadores la eligieron.
The main attraction of the GP2X was its operating system, which was a modified version of Linux, that is to say, free software, which allowed anyone with programming knowledge to create different applications, among which the emulators stood out, these allowed to see the excellent performance of the console, reason enough for many players to choose it.
A los dos años la empresa GamePark decide lanzar una versión mejorada con el nombre de GP2X F-200, a simple vista se observa cómo cambiaron el joystick analógico por un pad direccional, además de agregar una pantalla táctil, una mejor batería, una actualización de su sistema y soporte para memorias SDHC de 32 GB. Todos estos aspectos hicieron que la segunda versión fuera más popular.
Two years later, the company GamePark decided to launch an improved version with the name of GP2X F-200, at first glance you can see how they changed the analog joystick for a directional pad, in addition to adding a touch screen, a better battery, an update of its system and support for 32 GB SDHC memories. All these aspects made the second version more popular.
Al comienzo de su comercialización se tenía pensado que solamente fuese exclusiva de Sur Corea, sin embargo, debido a su excelente rendimiento en emulación varias personas decidieron importarlas en sus países, uno de ellos fue España, en donde muchos pudieron disfrutar de la GP2X, por tal motivo en dicho sector es una de las consolas portátiles de antaño más recordadas.
At the beginning of its commercialization it was thought to be exclusive only to South Korea, however, due to its excellent emulation performance several people decided to import it in their countries, one of them was Spain, where many could enjoy the GP2X, for that reason in that sector it is one of the most remembered portable consoles of yesteryear.
La GP2X también tuvo un corto catálogo de videojuegos exclusivos, esto fue debido a su software libre, ya que muchos desarrolladores no se interesaron en programar juegos a dicho sistema, sin embargo, tuvo la oportunidad de tener algunos juegos oficiales como Blazar, Payback, Elsewhere, Odonata, entre otros.
The GP2X also had a short catalog of exclusive video games, this was due to its free software, since many developers were not interested in programming games to that system, however, it had the opportunity to have some official games such as Blazar, Payback, Elsewhere, Odonata, among others.
A pesar de ser una de las consolas portátiles más relevantes de la séptima generación no tuvo más que 60.000 ventas, ya que en el momento de su lanzamiento le tocó competir contra la PSP, la cual ofrecía las mismas características en el apartado de la emulación, además de comercializarse en múltiples países y tener el legado de la PlayStation.
Despite being one of the most relevant portable consoles of the seventh generation, it did not have more than 60,000 sales, since at the time of its launch it had to compete against the PSP, which offered the same features in the emulation section, in addition to being marketed in multiple countries and having the legacy of the PlayStation.
Muchas de las consolas portátiles chinas que se lanzan actualmente al mercado son inspiraciones de la GP2X, dando a entender el gran legado que dejó esta extraordinaria consola, la cual merecía en su momento ser totalmente exitosa, pero como ya sabemos, este mercado es muy complicado de dominar, y más cuando existe una competencia la cual tiene años de experiencia en el desarrollo de estos sistemas.
Many of the Chinese handheld consoles that are currently launched in the market are inspirations of the GP2X, giving to understand the great legacy left by this extraordinary console, which deserved at the time to be totally successful, but as we know, this market is very difficult to dominate, especially when there is a competition which has years of experience in the development of these systems.
