Currently, there is a diversity of video game genres that allow us to make a huge list, but in the past, such diversity was very small, since there were not as many development companies as now, however, this does not mean that these classic games were bad, on the contrary, many of them served as a school for current developers, especially in a genre that the vast majority of veteran gamers find very interesting, the fighting games.

We can find many fighting video games, so many that we can cover a very large list of names, but very few of them have been able to mark a before and after in the history of video games, becoming legends that, until today, are still played by many players around the world, this makes that just by naming the title you feel the need to play them because of their great trajectory in history.

Below, you will find a small list of fighting video games that left an impressive mark in the history of video games, here you will not find who is better or superior, simply the reasons why they are considered by many a relic within the fighting games. If you consider that another game you know of this genre should be here you can indicate it in the comments section.

Killer Instinct

In the golden age of Rareware (video game developer) there were a large number of titles that were acclaimed for multiple factors, since they stood out in several technical sections, they only needed to stand out in the fighting genre, something they were able to achieve perfectly with a title that left many players with their mouths open in 1994, Killer Instinct.

Its spectacular graphics, innovative battle system, character design, attractive music, high quality gameplay, mind-blowing special effects, among other things, made it a hit in the arcades of those years. It was a spectacle to see two experienced people fight against each other in an arcade room, even today when you listen to its opening song it takes you back to the great 90's.

Mortal Kombat

It is essential to name this title in this list, since it was a big surprise for all players due to its explicit violence, so much was the impact it had that a classification system was created according to the degree of violence that the game has (ESRB). Over time it evolved, transforming into what we know today, but what it has never lost is its characteristic violence that has remained throughout all these years.

Guilty Gear

The first PlayStation was one of the most valued consoles of all times thanks to its wide catalog of titles, this allowed multiple companies to enter the world of video games, releasing really interesting things, one of them was the fabulous fighting game called Guilty Gear, released in 1998 and developed by the company Arc System Works.

Its particular animation, the way in which each battle was presented, the originality of each of the characters, and the spectacle that could be observed in each battle made it a very attractive videogame for the lovers of this genre. This resulted in a total sales success, making the developer company to make other sequels. Thanks to the existence of Guilty Gear it was possible to create a gem of fighting video games, which was not very commercial, but that does not take away the great evolution and perfectionism in many technical aspects that could be achieved, the great BlazBlue.

Tekken

This is one of the franchises that bet 100% on three-dimensional fights, precisely when the transition from 2D to 3D began, however, at that time other companies had already begun to make games with that visual aspect, but what NAMCO achieved was something simply spectacular.

As time went by, the game evolved in an incredible way, reaching the point we know today, each character and their movements were polished to a point that is difficult to overcome, but they always surprise us in an unexpected way with something new.

The King of Fighters

One of the best things that SNK could create, bringing together the fighters of the different fighting games developed by them and unite them in a title, besides improving progressively with each game released, as their movements, powers, animations, among other things, it is also inevitable not to think of the many tournaments that have been held around the world, something that has endured for many years among the world of video games.

Street Fighter

Finally, we have a title that many knew they would see on this list, and it was a must, because, thanks to this franchise, especially its second installment, the fighting genre of video games evolved in an impressive way, because it introduced mechanics that no other game had demonstrated, leaving a mark of epic proportions in history.

These were some video games of the fighting genre that marked a before and after in history, I would like to know if you agree with any of them or if you know others, post it in the comments section.

A surface level, but nonetheless appreciated overview of some of the fighters that were really impactful on the golden age of arcades (interestingly Guilty Gear being the ONLY case here that did start on a console instead of arcades, but got arcade entries on its second entry), stuff like this is always appreciated on my eyes :)
