What is going on, guys? It’s time for another “ The history of video games being blamed for violence" post. Let me start this off by thanking @pusen for informing me about the incident I’ll be going over in this video. Being from NA, it’s not very often that cases like this, that happen in other countries, make the news over here, and if they do, it’s covered very little.

Imagine this: you’re walking through your town one day. The sun is out, and the wind is carrying a gentle breeze. You’re taking in the sights, relaxing, and just enjoying the sunny day. Then it happens. There’s a loud boom, the ground shakes, and glass starts to rain down all around you. You’ve just witnessed a bombing.
It’s a scary thought. But for people the people of Utoya island that is located in Norway, it was more than a thought. On July 22, 2011, at approximately 3:26 PM a terrorist bombing was launched against a building complex in the town of Oslo. The building complex housed multiple government offices, including then Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

This attack would leave 8 dead, and dozens of people injured. Fearing that there may be other explosive devices, police warned residents of the area to stay in doors. The police determined that a car bomb was the source of the blast and this incident had similarity to the UnaBomber’s Oklahoma bombing.
But things wouldn’t end this day. During their investigation they had reports of gunshots at Youth camp hosted by the Norwegian labour party, located on an island resort.
Things at the youth camp were by far from okay. The bombing was just a warm up. Dressed as a police officer, the person responsible for the bombings headed towards this camp, with a rifle and a handgun. The camp was housing around 600 people, most of which were minors.

He opened fire on the camp and by the time the police had apprehended him; he had killed 68 people. Using the police uniform, he was even able to lure people towards him with the false sense of safety.
The Shooter:

The Shooter was 33-year-old Anders Breivik. Breivik held quite a few of racist views, including anti Muslim rhetoric. Leading up to the bombing, he had leased a farmhouse to make the purchasing of fertilizer for the bomb less suspicious.
Now, this is as far as I’m going to delve into this piece of shit. There is plenty of information out there if you’re more interested about it.
The Media implying video games were to blame:
When the trail took place, it was revealed that Breivik had been preparing for this attack for a while. In an attempt to cut off all social ties. It was claimed that he would spend 7 hours a day for consecutive months playing World of WarCraft.
The media chewed this up ( at least the articles I could find) like they do when video games are “involved” in any tragedy. But this isn’t the only game he played. He also played MW2. He claimed that he had played this game to get familiar with the sights on guns. Now you may be saying that’s stupid. But I’m here to tell you it’s not.
I remember the first time I shot a gun. I was around 17 and me and my older brother were hunting. Taking a break, we decided to shoot at a target. My brother passed me the .303 not realizing I never shot a gun before, and taking the things I learned from FPS games, I crouched down, shot the target, and ejected the shell of the bullet.
When it comes to FPS games, there is a lot that can be learned, especially with games like COD that try to replicate guns exactly.
So I can 100% believe that he did this. Of course, knowing how to load a rifle, and actually being able to hit a target, are two different things entirely. But since he was armed with an automatic rifle ( I’m assuming it was an actual automatic rifle, IE you can just hold down the trigger to shoot) he didn’t have that problem.
But did Breivik try to spin this as the WoW influenced him to do this? That video games were this big devil that somehow turned him into a racist terrorist? Well, no. He actually defended the game, stating that it had nothing to do with him committing the shooting, and he even threatened to cut off his mic when the persecutor was asking him questions about said game.
Despite defending the game and claiming that it had nothing to do with his actions, an expert witness was brought in to testify on his behalf. During an interview with a TV news station ,Norwegian anthropologist Thomas Hylland Eriksen had said that he believes that Breivik could not tell the difference between reality and the games he had played.

This here played into the stereotype that video games were the devil. While doing research for this article, almost every article I've encountered includes World of WarCraft in the article. I
Well, if you ask me, someone who is able to tell you that a video game had nothing to do with his actions, and could summarize what was going on by reading between the lines, someone who had planned this terrorist attack for months prior, leased a farmhouse, and knew how to create bombs, can differentiate between reality and fantasy.
Plus if we really wanted to get into it, when in WoW was there ever a quest to go and murder a bunch of children with firearms?
Conclusion:
Even though he had admitted to these attacks, he had pleaded not guilty. He was even diagnosed at one point with paranoid schizophrenia, but a second court order diagnosis showed that this wasn’t the case. When all was said and done, this piece of crap got the maximum sentence, 21 years. But that isn’t nearly enough of a punishment for what he has done. It takes a real POS to take out their aggressions on kids. I think a more fitting punishment would be to leave him in a room with the victim’s parents for five minutes, and whatever happens, happens.

Pero, ¿trató Breivik de darle la vuelta a esto ya que el WoW lo influenció para hacerlo? ¿Que los videojuegos eran ese gran demonio que de alguna manera lo convirtió en un terrorista racista? Bueno no. De hecho, defendió el juego, afirmando que no tenía nada que ver con que él cometiera el tiroteo, e incluso amenazó con cortarle el micrófono cuando el perseguidor le estaba haciendo preguntas sobre dicho juego.
A pesar de defender el juego y afirmar que no tenía nada que ver con sus acciones, se trajo a un testigo experto para que testificara en su favor. Durante una entrevista con una estación de noticias de televisión, el antropólogo noruego Thomas Hylland Eriksen dijo que cree que Breivik no podía distinguir la diferencia entre la realidad y los juegos que había jugado.

Conclusión:
A pesar de que había admitido estos ataques, se había declarado inocente. Incluso se le diagnosticó en un momento esquizofrenia paranoide, pero un segundo diagnóstico por orden judicial mostró que no era así. Cuando todo estuvo dicho y hecho, este pedazo de mierda recibió la sentencia máxima, 21 años. Pero eso no es suficiente castigo por lo que ha hecho. Se necesita un POS real para sacar sus agresiones a los niños. Creo que un castigo más apropiado sería dejarlo en una habitación con los padres de la víctima durante cinco minutos y pase lo que pase.

wao un tema muy controversial, pero yo creo que ya estas personas están dañadas y pues con los videos juegos pueden calmar un poco la ansiedad pero no es suficiente y luego comente estos aptos.

It really is. It makes me curious though how exactly their brains are wired.
They are people with some kind of serious disorder, in their minds what they do makes sense and is right, how the human mind works is something fascinating and at the same time terrifying.
Right, it's a huge mess. Like what makes one person turn out bad while another turns out good? Is it nature vs nurture? Are some people just born evil or more inclined to do evil deeds? What makes a person just snap, and more importantly, what makes a person think that their actions are good?
Wait what? He just got 21 years in jail because all of that?
Yup, that was the max sentence that could be given out.
But why? He was of legal age
