Vampire Survivors: Overview and Weapon Tiers

Hello fellow Hivians!

The past couple days I've found myself playing a relatively new arcade style game called Vampire Survivor.

The general premise is that play a character that kills the evil denizens of the night by moving around while the game auto fires various spells and abilities. It is incredibly simple but easily can hook you for hours. As you kill creatures, you'll collect gems which provide experience allowing you to increase your power via upgrading current skills or providing new ones.

The game is rouge-like and matches typically take anywhere between 15-20 minutes for a failed run and just over 30 minutes for a successful run. I wont go into too much more than that else I'd be spoiling some aspects of the game.

The game is primarily played via PC though I imagine it could work via mobile browser.

Check it out on Steam for $3 or for free via browser on the official website.

Current Playable Characters

As of today there are 10 characters available to play with a rumored hidden 11th (I've not unlocked it if it exists). Generally each character is mostly the same however they all have different starter weapons and generally have a slight impact to base stats (increased speed, higher xp gain, higher dmg, etc)

So far I've played a bit of all of the characters and I'm most consistent with Gennaro. His perk is adding a bonus projectile to all weapons. This is a massive boost imo during the early game where some of the late weapons tend to actually be lacking.

Weapon Combos

)
The most powerful weapons in Vampire Survivor are obtained by combining a commonly obtained weapon and a commonly obtained accessory. Once both items are within the players inventory AND the player levels the weapon to lvl 8, the user will then find an evolved form of the base weapon in their next post-10 min chest.

These weapons are all incredibly powerful and most can boast over 1k dps when paired with the right accessory items. Some of these items in particular I consider to be absolutely necessary to win a run though everyone has their favorites. From top to bottom: Bloody Tear, Death Spiral, Heaven Sword, Hellfire, Holy Wand, Thousand Edge, Unholy Vespers, Vandalier, Soul Eater.

The only evolved weapon that deviates from this upgrade path is Vandalier as that one requires 2 weapons (Peachone and Ebony Wings) and both need to be lvl 8.

Weapon Tiers

So to start off, as mentioned all of the evolved weapons are incredibly powerful. As such, almost all of them are ranked S or A with Soul Eater as an exception. This is primarily because the accessory required to obtain it and the miniscule damage it does is not outweighed by its regen properties. Simply put, you give up WAY too much by choosing this evolution over any of the others.

S Tier

Vandelier easily is the best end game weapon. It far surpassed the DPS of any other evolution that I have tested across countless runs. It does have a key weakness however as until end game its lack of area and sustain damage can get you killed. Another major downside is that Ebony and Peachone are both terrible which means the entire time you are building those two, you'll be effectively handicapped in power/damage. Despite that the end game push potential earns an S.

Death Spiral is another end game weapon that can clear the screen. It massively benefits from weapon cooldown as its base weapon axe is VERY slow. Unlike Vandelier, DS is easily a weapon I will always try and select for all runs. It is simply that good.

Unholy Vespers is effectively a not as good Death Spiral. That said, it is still incredible at keeping creatures at bay and when combined with projectile speed and area of effect it can carry many of your runs.

A Tier

A tier is made up of the remaining evolutions (sans Soul Eater) and two non-evolving weapons. Generally you'll need at least 1 or two of these to complete a successful run either because they give you path clearing ability or accel at pushing high DPS. Santa Water in particular can completely lock down areas throughout all phases of the game if kept up to level. Runetracer on the other hand if combined with extra projectiles can draw rainbows on your screen as it slaughters everything. It is effectively a less concentrated yet persistent Death Spiral.

B Tier

B tier primarily includes the better base weapons. One thing to note is that Clock Lancet does not do any damage and for the most part is a poor pick for simply going for a run completion. However, if your goal is to survive as long as possible it as well as Laurel from Tier C are almost required.

C Tier

C Tier consists of simply put, terrible items. Garlic quickly phases out and is really only decent for early game during which it can one tap bats/ghosts. Bone is a far worse version of runetracer and as a starter weapon it is inconsistent at best.

D Tier

Oh D tier... why is the pentagram even in the game... Yes, it is all powerful but at what cost???

Can you write the next time in the beginning on what platform the game can be played? I found it after a quick search, but would have been nice :)

Ahh absolutely would have made sense to include that. Thanks for pointing out such a massive and obvious miss.

I forgot to mention that it is a great post. I play a lot of Pixel Dungeon on my mobile, so it caught my attention right away. Thanks for sharing! :)

I've seen a lot of streamers play this lately. It kinda came and blew up out of nowhere. Looks cool! Definitely a lot deeper than I thought it would be.

Yeah, it had a REALLY slow start and its face value simplicity likely had a part in that. Overall its a really solid game. I hope the rapid success as of late makes the dev's dreams come true.

Been watching VOD gameplay of this game for a while from my favorite streamer... while it looks fun it does feel like you just go on autopilot after awhile 😂

Yeah, there is only so much replay value in it currently but for a $3 price point it is easily one of the best $/entertainment value out there right now.

Dev has been adding characters, weapons, etc to the game as well since release so there is quite a bit of potential.
