Gradius is a series of video games developed by Konami for a variety of handheld, console and arcade platformers.
First released in 1985 for arcade machines, it was later adapted for Nintendo Entertainment System, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, PC-8801, Game Boy, X1, MSX, ZX Spectrum, PC Engine, X68000, Mobile Phones, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
In this classic shooter video game, players take on the role of the intrepid spaceship pilot Vic Viper, on a mission to defeat the evil Bacterian alien race and save the galaxy from destruction.

I remember when I played this game for the first time on the Nintendo NES, it was and still is a good game, I never got tired of finishing it and it was one of the best games of the time.
As you say, it was one of the best games of the time and it did its job of entertaining.
Oh I loved Gradius and although most retro-games are something I would avoid going back to revisit this was just awesomely executed and would likely still be fun to me today. These are the games they should be remastering but maybe that is just me being nostalgic. This type of game is rarely seen anymore.
