I was in the mood to check out the game I used to play a lot two years ago. I don't think I have ever written about this game other than mentioning I play Wesnoth and inviting people on steem two years ago just in case they want to play wesnoth or know about wesnoth. Apparently, not many know about this game nor I have read a review about it yet. Perhaps I am not meticulous. Nonetheless, today I will be introducing Wesnoth again alongside an easy campaign game.
Background information
Wesnoth is a turntable RPG available in multi-platform and an open source game. It is available offline and online with high fantasy theme. There are many adventures and story plot in the game that you can choose. Even if you don't have a steam account, you can still download this game. For more information and the download link, you can find from their main page Wesnoth.
Here are some of the campaign story that is available without downloading an add-ons. As a rookie, you can start playing A tale of Two Brothers. It's pretty easy campaign with 4 scenarios. This is also a sceneario that will let you learn about the game basics.
Gameplay
You can start the game by doing a tutorial but you can also directly play with campaign and select the difficulty level. If you are overly confident, you can try playing knight but this time, I am showing you the gameplay with Horseman which means my units are going to consist of horsemen and footpads. You will see the unit list later in this gameplay. So, hang on.
Click OK
The screen will you show the background story of the battle. You can click on skip but you can also read the story which will give you a hint or two about the purpose of the battle. I like to read everything but again, you can click on skip.
In that screen you can see: Menu, Actions, The Map, & The Unit information. For instance, it is showing a unit called " baran" a red mage with 42 HP. It also shows the type of skills and the combat impact.
In this game, you also have to notice the timing. You can click on the image showing sunset. You will notice the effectiveness of the attack. It is different for " neutral" and "chaotic" unit.
After clicking end turn, there will be a message board showing the purpose of the game. The mission of this scenario is to slay/kill Mordak, the evil mage with horde of zombies.You can also follow the hints to gain a victory in this scenario.
When you first have the chance to move, you need to move your unit to grab a village. By grabbing a village you will earn gold to purchase units later in the game. So grab as much as you can while you can. You also need to consider the other party to be grabbing/taking over your village. When that happens you will lose an opportunity to get more gold.
As you can see above, those are the units from Mordak. They are chaotic and you can see in the right side bar, they have 25% effectiveness attack at night.
In this game you can see your unit list and the type through "action" then click on unit list. You will see the traits of your troops, the type of attack, the HP, XP level. This will help you decide your move in the game.
Recruiting Unit
After you move all the units you have, you might want to have some more. You can click on the actions and then click on recruit. You will see available unit that you can buy and its price. When deciding what to buy you can combine unit with high HP and high attack effectiveness.
Game Setting For Convenient
You can click on menu -> preferences. There will be options to set up the game hotkeys and also the display. This game can be played on old laptop and low specs laptop. So, even if you don't have expensive or even decent gaming gear, you can still play something.
The Battle
During the battle there will be a board showing the skill of your enemy and the effectiveness of the attack and if the enemy will strike back. So basically you see 16x2 meaning if you successfully strike the opponent, the enemy will lose 32 HP. The same goes with the enemy. If the attack is successful, you will lose 18HP from it. Also notice the ghoul. Ghoul has the ability to poison. So this means, you will get poisoned. In order to lift the poison you can bring your unit to a village nearby or bring mage healer nearby the affected unit.
If you enjoy knowing more about your unit and the statistic from it, you can click on profile. It will redirect you to the help section which tells you about everything you need to know about the game from the gameplay to the units.
Make sure to always have other unit nearby especially when you are attacked by the enemy. Also always protect your unit. In a way, this game is similar to playing chess. So, bring that chess game mindset into this game and you can easily win the scenario faster.
Obviously, you will win the game when you finish the objectives. You can click on end scenario to move on into another scenario. In the next scenario you will not have the same unit but you can recall your previous unit and normally you will have more advantage as the previous unit has more experience than if you recruit a fresh unit.
This game is quite easy to play. However it can get boring after a while especially when you only play campaigns. It would be better to play with a friend by using the multiplayer feature of this game. I would recommend this game to those who like RPG turn table game. For example, if you love playing D&D, you might enjoy playing this one too. But if you like something more challenging with a lot of mission and not monotone, this game is not for you.
