Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord - Episode 9

The Southern Empire

We continue the Bannerlord run with an immediate decision to make:

Our Clan has made enough of a name for itself that as the Southern Empire becomes embroiled in war, they seek us out with a mercenary contract. 149 Denars per influence, paid out daily.

It's honestly a pretty good deal - most of the time I seem to be around the 140 Denar mark when offered contracts and we DO need the money. We've been sitting at or around the 10k Denar mark for a while and it's not a bad place to be per-say but it doesn't leave us a lot of breathing room if stuff goes sideways and we have to rebuild our army again.

So, we accept the contract and immediately learn exactly who the Southern Empire is at war with.

Time to leave I guess! We grab our shit and high tail it out of there. We're on the far side of this kingdom so getting to allied territory without piquing the attention of a commander might be a bit of a trick, but we're going to try! No way are we going to waste the time doing the safe route around enemy territory. Who has time for that nonsense?!

It gets a bit hairy when we spot an enemy party with 99 units directly beside another enemy party with 58... but then the larger army completely ignores us, and we get a chance to pit ourselves against a fairly similarly powered group. This doesn't happen super often for us, so it's a wonderful chance to test our mettle.

So, we grab Harvest2.0 and start hunting for souls. We don't take out many folks ourselves in this, but we do manage to take out one of their commanders (right before getting knocked out ourselves).

Eighteen losses, as compared to forty-one on their side. Dang. I mean, I knew my troops were good, but this is an impressive number. 2x the losses when the dust settles. Most of whom are lower-ranking soldiers I simply hadn't levelled up much yet. We end up being able to upgrade 16 troops, too, which makes us even stronger. Go us! We're unstoppable!

We get our party back to max capacity and fully healed, and then we're off to join a fight. We find Obron's army near Phycaon running from a fairly equally-sized group so I toss myself into the mix - bringing us to 314 units against 233 units. Should be an easy win!

image.png

We take the fight to the field, and immediately I realize why we were running. They have a TON of high-levelled cavalry troops. Uh-oh, spaghetti-oh!

image.png

The sea of red text in the top right? Yeah, that's not a good sign about how this particular match-up is going.

image.png

Well. Our 'Unstoppable' army sure didn't stay that way for too long, did it? It costs us 1458 Denars, but we are offered freedom a handful of hours later - which affords us the ability to first curse our hubris and second, start re-building our army. Again. Naturally, we take the deal.

By this point, we're old hats at rebuilding, so it takes a matter of minutes to re-populate our army and recall our scattered companions to our party. It doesn't even cost us that much, all things considered. We end the session by completing a quest to handle some poachers and then guiding the skills of both Varic and Alda for their birthdays. We end the session not quite as well-off as we started, but even after everything we're still carrying around 13,500 Denars and our army is 58 strength.

Damn, you've had to rebuild your army a few times. Maybe that peace was a good thing, giving you time to rebuild.

Won't be the last time an army of mine gets wafflestomped, hahah. Always nice when I can get a bit of peaceful time to rebuild though

 last year

Pride is a deadly sin friend! Hahahaha It seems you had a few problems at the end of the game, but nothing to write home about, come on, pay and start over.

Besides, you still have a lot of money left!

I would like to say that I learned from my hubris here, but I think we both know that'd be a lie. This is not the last time I'm going to wipe out an entire army thinking I've finally got a horde that can best a stronger opponent.

:P One of these times it's GOING to come true! I can't quit now.

It must be frustrating to constantly rebuild your army. I play this game the same way you do, when you see a big army capture and kill as many small armies as you see, that's the key to victory hahaha. Good to see you're getting more active in the community man, keep it up!

It's not so bad honestly - It does give me a chance to try different troop trees and see if different compositions are noticeably better or worse! There's always a bright side. And, for a few turns I end up making BANK without having to pay for troops LOL.

I played this game soo much and the best composition is sturgian heavy axeman and battania fian champions. These combo is unbeatable.
