Although in recent years I've become a fairly "casual" gamer, spending most of my time playing on my smartphone or with simpler experiences like Mario Kart or FC26, many of my most impactful memories with a controller in my hands are from more traditional and hardcore games. These are the ones that, instead of being designed for anyone to enjoy, boast complex narratives, gameplay that blends various genres, and, usually, a high difficulty level that contributes to our immersion as players.
My skill has always been limited; I've completed few games, and even fewer on a high difficulty level. However, few have managed to win my heart like Mass Effect 2, a title I expected little from but which ended up becoming one of my all-time favorite pieces of entertainment.
For those unfamiliar with it, Mass Effect 2 is part of a trilogy of games developed by BioWare and Electronic Arts for the seventh generation of consoles, originally conceived for the Xbox 360, but making the jump to the PlayStation 3 a couple of years later.
Loosely inspired by science fiction and space operas like Star Trek and Star Wars, Mass Effect immersed us in a galaxy far, far away, blending action and adventure with war and complex political conflicts.
Mechanically, Mass Effect 2 could be defined as a third-person shooter (very typical of its time), but characterized by the inclusion of Western RPG elements that allow us to manipulate our character's stats and level up, and profoundly influence the decisions made throughout its extensive plot.
Although each installment in the original Mass Effect trilogy has its own storyline, one of its most interesting aspects is the possibility of completing each game with the same character, an avatar named Shepard that we can customize to our liking in terms of physical appearance and personality, as well as attributes and combat styles.
Mass Effect 2 is probably the most beloved game in the entire franchise, considering that it not only boasts the best blend of combat and strategy in the entire saga (without abandoning its RPG elements), but also features an iconic and moving story, full of characters that will win our hearts and an ending where every decision matters.
You see, without giving away any spoilers, Mass Effect 2 revolves around a complex adventure in which we must recruit a specialized team across the galaxy, with the goal of having this team carry out a "suicide mission" that, to put it simply, could cost the entire crew their lives.
This creates a rather unique gameplay dynamic where, despite the sense of urgency of our mission, we have enough time to immerse ourselves in all the intricate plans and systems this universe has to offer, getting to know its inhabitants, their economies, and spending hours completing main and side missions that work in harmony to make this the most immersive experience possible.
While Mass Effect 2 isn't the most complicated game in the world, I was so hooked on its gameplay mechanics and the lore of its universe that it was inevitable to put an absurd amount of effort into doing things right, something that considerably lengthens its already quite dense campaign.
For this very reason, I not only went to the trouble of completing the suicide mission following a series of very specific requirements to obtain the best possible result, but I also made sure to do it on one of the highest difficulty settings.
And although I have already spoken about this game on several occasions in this community since I registered on Hive, it is always good to remember why at some point in my life I felt so much passion for a video game that I had no faith in at first.

That's my favorite game. I also loved the Trilogy, and Tali and Garrus. (The end of the third is still being... the end of the third no matter what) But Mass Effect 2 was PEAK... One of my favorite scenes is when the Normandy Reborn, is sad that Bioware will not be the same even if they want, and will be hard to found or create another games like the Trilogy. But there is still hope I guess...
