Shadow of the colossus tuvo un desarollo por parte del studio de sce japan studio y tea ico, además este videojuego fue publicado por la famosa compañía de sony entertainment para la consola de playstation 2, el videojuego fue lanzado en octubre del año 2005 por lo que tuvo un gran lanzamiento y posteriormente el juego también fue muy bien recibido por la comunidad, el videojuego fue dirigo por fumito ueda, y desarrollado por el estudio que mencioné anteriormente, el videojuego se basa en acción y aventura, por lo que teníamos lugares donde explorar batallas emocionantes y grandes escenas de combates que podíamos disfrutar con el mando de la consola de ps2, el nombre de shadow of colossus lo recibe debido a las asombrosas criaturas que podemos encontrar en este videojuego y esto es uno de los aspectos que más recuerdan los jugadores que llegaron a disfrutar de este gran juego.

En japón el videojuego originalmente iba a ser lanzado con el nombre de wander and the colossus debido a que el protagonista principal del juego es un joven llamado wander, y la razón del por qué en el videojuego hay colosos de gran tamaño es debido a que el joven wander se ha adentrado en tierras prohibidas, debido a esto wander debe emprender un viaje a través de toda la vasta extensión de tierras de este lugar en su caballo para poder lograr la hazaña de derrotar a 16 seres de gran tamaño y poder conocidos generalmente por el nombre de los colosos, de ahí se entiende el nombre que lleva el videojuego, shadow of colossus debido a que incluso en la carátula original del videojuego podemos observar como un coloso está parado delante de nuestro protagonista montado en su caballo y es aquí donde podemos observar y detallar el gran tamaño de los colosos en comparación a nuestro personaje, este aspecto en aquellos tiempos en los que la consola de ps2 tenía ciertas limitaciones en cuanto a mecánicas en videojuegos fue algo increíble de lograr por lo que sumó muchos puntos para que el videojuego fuera una de las joyas de la consola de ps2 ya que incluso a día de hoy hay jugadores que lo juegan de nuevo para recordar viejos momentos.
