R-Type I think was the first game that I ever bought in a store back in the Commodore 64 days. At the time it was just amazing but also crazy difficiult with no option to save (that I knew of) so I never got much further than the 2nd level. Still great memories though and I now also have it on my Steamdeck as one of the Nostalgia Retro Games.

Growing up in Northern California, there were no stores that sold computer games, at least not for the C64 (they had Amiga and DOS but barely - NES was their main focus). I missed out on so many games for the C64 back then. I was too young to understand that mail order is not as evil as I had convinced myself it was (having to pay then wait a LONG time to get the game was foreign to a pre-teen).
