In memory of E3, A look back at the highlights

in Hive Gaming2 years ago

It's been a few weeks since the announcement of the cancellation of E3 is a good time to remember, to talk a little about what was lost.

It has been more than two decades of events with thousands of announcements that have changed the video game forever, since its inception has always been a technology fair where the most important developers make life and has been so as they have forged a community behind, but apparently all that has gone down the toilet in a few months, anyway here I leave a little of the events that I feel have been the most important along with some moments well remembered by the players.

VentureBeat

The first of all

You have to start somewhere and although the video game did have a place in several technology fairs it had the reputation of being just a toy for the kids at home, and not a possible new multi-billion dollar industry.

Right from the start Sony and Nintendo relied heavily on this new space so much so that it became the central focus of most of the new releases in each period, even of first line consoles like the Nintendo 64 or the Playstation 2.

GeekTirant

The first Metal Gear Solid

One of my favorite moments, Hideo Kojima was already a respectable developer with some good games but his real ambition was to take gaming to the next level in terms of storytelling.

For this Kojima was inspired by several secret agent movies that were all the rage in the 90s and resulted in one of the best spy games and sagas ever seen, the first installment became an instant classic the first time it saw the light of day.

NintendoLife

The birth of the Nintendo DS

I will never forget that this was the first E3 in which I was aware and could see the releases or at least the news, I think Nintendo was in an uncomfortable position and although I had my gameboy I think my goal was to buy a playstation.

Until Nintendo came along and changed history with their model, they were in a difficult position and the DS was the savior and clearly the winner of the generation, opening a new market of gamers and establishing the dynamic of Nintendo innovating at every step they take, this philosophy is used to this day.

Kotaku

Th Last Of Us refines the videogame

In 2013 it was very fashionable the zombie theme in all media, whether movies, series or video games and see The Last Of Us being developed seemed that we were going to have another game with that theme, nothing further than planned

I think this game is a living representation of what a video game can achieve at a narrative level, what Metal Gear Solid was doing for decades, now here it seemed much more like an author's work, with an excellent script and moments where humans with their actions were the focus of attention.

Hype can be dangerous

Also E3 has given us some polemic moments and has put several critical looks towards the studio, I remember some but I think none has been as loud as Cyberpunk and Watch Dogs, both titles were developed in a fairly short period of time knowing the dimension that have these titles only to then fall into disgrace and the multitude of demands from the players.

latimes

Just a little reminder for when we want to support a development, I learned these months that you have to be critical with the games and skeptical with the promises that many of these studios make trying to sell us the games, the E3 also does its part (or rather did)

Indian Express

A bitter end

We all thought that E3 couldn't die this way, in the dark at a time where a large majority of developers have realized that they can compete with this kind of conferences having a fraction of their costs, something that has been lethal for the show in the short term but I believe that a good part of the studios will return to face to face shows like E3 in the future, well you don't have to look far to see some game shows around so we can't consider this kind of shows as dead.

Sort:

I didn't remember about Watch Dogs, it's true that there was a controversy with the first game at the time haha, what memories. I think the E3 is likely to resurface, I have the feeling that at some point the big 3 will agree and decide to attend again, although I also see the possibility that next year they announce its definitive closure.

E3 was necessary in the early days of gaming but over time lots of big players in the gaming industry began to pull back on public events even before the pandemic hit the world and that was already a big loss for E3. The transformation of a business is always the roughest and many don't survive. E3 just couldn't keep up with interactive virtual events and the new ways of hosting an event.

Thanks for the run down on the life of E3! Hopefully more gaming conventions pop up and allow players the opportunity to physically participate with the companies and developers.

I think it's a goodbye to E3, although I think something similar to this idea will appear in the future.

E3 had a good run but I guess publishers just want to do their own thing now. I don't mind really.
