The only problem I see is, that even the best game needs to have a minimum number of players for trading, a critical mass so to say. How likely it is that the game will take off?

That's true indeed, even the best game won't succeed without enough players to make it go off.
Obviously I'm a bit biased here so take it with a grain of salt, but I'm pretty confident that the game is going to take off at least within the crypto world. Last I checked there were already 320 unique accounts that bought at least an Origin - quite good for a game that only has an Early Alpha version to show and only relied on word of mouth for organic growth so far.
I fully trust its developer (@elindos) and he really is putting all his heart and soul into making the game. So while I can't make any guarantees of course, I believe that eXode will be here to stay.
