Why you should NOT play MMORPGs — eng/esp

I have to talk about a plague that has existed for many years, decades have passed and this danger still does not disappear, it continues to affect poor people who are introduced without knowing that they will lose their lives and will never recover them, few are those who warn about the devourer of souls causing the unwary to fall one after another, due to the nice publicity that the big businessmen allow themselves to pay thanks to the obtaining of riches due to this type of video games, the obsession that causes is indescribable, they feel the duty to be better and better and for that reason they resort or to play more for hours and hours, even full days or simply pay to have better objects, not to mention that some ask you for membership to start playing. Young people who feel lonely are the big victim, being in a virtual world where they have friends, it feels like an escape from their sad reality, where instead of facing things they isolate themselves where they are "truly happy", what they don't know is that they are hurting themselves. Lately I have seen a lot of promotion about MMORPGs in the community and I simply consider it unacceptable, instead of supporting each other as partners, we only harm ourselves by promoting MMORPGs, titles that harm people's minds and health.

We don't have to go very far back, the beginning of this disease starts around 1994, when Warcraft was first released, which would later give rise to the obsession of many in 2004, World of Warcraft. Many important media and cartoons have depicted the concern for players of the game, which still continues to this day, warning how too much of the game can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and act as a kind of drug that consumes you, creating a long-term dependency, you feel good when you complete quests, Every time you are rewarded you get that dose of dopamine that encourages you to keep playing for hours and it is non-stop, reaching unhealthy points where the individual with the desire to improve can last for hours in the same area killing the same enemies in order to level up or obtain objects and resources, believing in his great imagination or rather bias that this act is something really fun. A clear example of this problem can be found in South Park, in the episode called "Make Love, Not Warcraft", where we can see how the protagonists degrade their conditions as human beings the more time they spend playing the videogame, culminating in a totally deplorable state and even when they have achieved their objective, they have no intention of stopping, thus faithfully representing reality.

After other companies saw that MMORPGs could be profitable by taking the lives of innocent people, they decided over the years to release their own version of WoW, simply the same game with a different appearance but with the same results, some others being finished by anonymous saviours who through the use of hacking managed to defeat the yoke of the creator company, as is the case of Tales of Pirates. Some of these titles usually abuse advertising to attract public, catching poor unwary people in their dirty clutches, such advertising could even be considered invasive, a clear and obvious example is Albion Online, which objectively is a bad game that only has players due to advertising or by other players looking to get their friends to play too, trying to get as many of their friends to join the "fun adventure", almost looking like people who want to get people into a pyramid scam. Although WoW is still the king, today there is a MMORPG that due to its slight innovation has managed to attract much of the gaming community, called VALHEIM, this title by grabbing several aspects of games such as Minecraft, title that also destroyed and snatched many lives, create a mixture that is simply addictive, if a person you know invite them to play with them this game, say no, they will thank me later, I'm saving your life.

Having exposed the dangers and pitfalls of this criminal "entertainment medium", I hope that you will become more aware when you decide to play or recommend that others play because you know, a single video game can change your life permanently and by the time you regret it, it may be too late, You will have lost all your friends, you will have moved away from your family and you will end up with no social life at all, let me tell you that if you spend hours in front of a PC you are wasting your existence as well as letting the demon of sedentary lifestyle into your body, you won't even be fit enough to climb a flight of stairs. I'm not saying that you should stop having fun playing video games, I just want you to be aware of the dangers of those titles that base their premise on creating a character by entering a world where you can live a fake life that your subconscious will easily prefer to reality. And studies confirm it, videogames may not make you a violent person but what they can do is turn you into a withdrawal addict who will always want his drug, his little dose of a MMORPG.

Sort:

I have to say that I disagree with you in general, but there are points where I agree. Yes, MMOs take away people's lives, but it's their choice. Some people, for example, I only play 2-3 hours a day and I enjoy it and quit. I have friends who play 12 hours a day, but they usually quit after a month anyway, so they don't dedicate their lives.

Yes, there are people who know how to control themselves, but there are others who dive deep into the game, and just because they do it by choice doesn't mean they don't have a problem.

Dude, you don't have to worry about that. This is not a serious social problem, people themselves will realize sooner or later what they need to do.

Well, World of Warcraft wasn't the first MMORPG. 🙂 Although it was the most successful one.

I very much agree with @incublus's opinion on the matter.

Your article reads like a hyperbolic rant, to be honest. You talk about people losing friends, family, their social life, getting fatter and unable to walk up stairs. That's hyperbole. Most people play MMOs to connect further with friends and be more social.

The tiny percentage of players you write about? Maybe 1% of the entire playerbase is like that. Millions of people play MMOs with no issue whatsoever.

Who said WoW was the first? I never said that. I mention it as the beginning because it is the most successful as you mention.

You mention it yourself, they are more sociable in a fictitious environment that comes to replace reality, because they feel better in there.

I didn't say that at all. Using myself as an example: I have a family. I have a child. I have friends who also have children. We all go out to the beach, to restaurants, to each other's homes and have barbecues and fun together. We also play MMOs and other co-op games together.

Yep. We're definitely more sociable in a fictitious environment. 🙄

hahahahahaha I had never seen someone take it to that extreme, if you put it like that I totally agree, but it usually doesn't happen like that xD likewise south park also takes things to the extreme, but in general terms it's just a game man, it depends on everyone how they played it

We all know that it does happen as I described but nobody wants to accept the truth.

 last year
