Agent Q Puts Atari 2600 Players in the Role of Espionage Spy

in Hive Gaming5 months ago (edited)

The Atari 2600 is obviously the granddaddy of gaming, it may not have been the first home console, but it is one of the most popular. Proof of how popular it permeates gaming today with independent homebrew developers continuing to release new games for it. Agent Q by artefacto is one of the more recent releases I came across.

Simple Story for the Win

Agent Q pits you as the mysterious agent, Q, with your goal escaping an enemy complex with secrets you have stolen. Can you outsmart the security zones that patrol each zone. Collect keycards, avoid/repel enemy drones and find the exit. There is a demo available, it features one zone for you to check out before purchase. I love demos.

Made With Modern Tools for a Classic Console

Artefacto created Agent Q with the help of modern tools. Batari Basic is a BASIC interpreter for the Atari 2600 that pulls in the easy to learn programming language.

A quick Google search will give you tons of information on learning BASIC or expanding your BASIC understanding to include Batari BASIC. For fans like me, the end result is what matters. I have interest but no skills, or time to learn, to program games.

Batari BASIC has really opened up the Atari 2600 programming world to a much larger audience than before. There are tons of new games in development using this interpreter.

If you could program a game, what type of game would you make? If you are a programmer, let me know, I love checking out new games and covering them for a wide audience. I have been gaming since the Pong days and have a penchant for older stuff (interest in newer stuff stops at Fortnite and Call of Duty Mobile, unfortunately).

Agent Q is available on itch.io by artefacto. Check out his work, he has several games available from stuff like Agent Q to puzzle games all for the Atari 2600.
