Fan Port of Metroid Shown for Sega Genesis

Unless you have lived in a cave as a gamer since forever, you probably know that Nintendo owns Metroid. For those that were not around back in the day, Sega and Nintendo used to be at each other’s throats, even slinging mud at each other in Congressional hearings. That is not stopping fans from porting a slightly enhanced version of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) version of Metroid to the Sega Genesis.

About on Par for NES To Genesis Ports

I do not mean that in a bad way. I am just saying it has a very late 80s/early 90s look to it that fits other ports from that era. The graphics and sounds are only marginally improved, mostly just adding a bit more color and detail as well as parallax scrolling backgrounds.

Look at the ports of Double Dribble, Tecmo Bowl, and Battletoads. They were handled the same way. Improvements were minimal and the game was released.

This could be a turn off for most but for me, it is a great aesthetic. If I wanted full on remakes I would focus on the many official, and not so official, releases available. This style update comes off as a middle ground to me, like it is 12-Bit, slightly better than 8-Bit but not quite as good as what 16-Bit can do.

Many Irons in the Fire

I am unsure of a release date on this port of Metroid to the Sega Genesis. As YouTube content creator, TheSegaGuru points out, there are quite a few things missing in this release so far.

Also, the team behind this port is the same team behind other games, namely the Castlevania IV port, also to the Sega Genesis.

Also, there is no demo available, the only information I can find is the embedded above video. Check it out, let The Sega Guru know what you think and then join me in waiting on more information on this port. I just hope the developers can at least release a demo before Nintendo’s lawyers put a stop to it.
