If you are like me, you probably enjoyed arcades every chance you got. Whether this was actual arcades like Aladdin’s Castle or just a small collection of arcade machines at the local gas station, arcades were fun. Unfortunately, I do not remember Three Wonders by Capcom, released in 1991, for their Capcom Power System Changer (basically Capcom’s Neo Geo style option). I don’t remember any of the three titles Capcom included, let alone the one that is the topic of this article – Midnight Wanderers.
Part of a Trio of Arcade Games
Three Wonders included three games in one cabinet. Midnight Wanderers was joined by Chariot and Don’t Pull.
Midnight Wanderers is a 2D side scrolling action-adventure game putting you in control of a hobbit. You are armed with a bow and arrow and can climb and jump.
Chariot is a scrolling shooter with a somewhat whacky premise but a great art style.
Don’t Pull is a puzzle game in the style of the Adventures of Lolo (Sokoban with more to do).
Originally Three Wonders was released in 1991 by Capcom for their Capcom Power System Changer. This was basically their take on the Neo Geo with interchangeable cartridges allowing arcade owners the chance at a variety of games without having to buy fully brand new cabinets each time.
Powered by Scorpion Engine
I want to highlight that Midnight Wanderers is running on the Scorpion Engine. It is not a bad thing, it is just an engine, similar to M.U.G.E.N. or, to quite a lesser extent, Unreal Engine or Unity Engine. I am bringing this up because Scorpion Engine is quickly becoming the M.U.G.E.N. of 2D side scrolling arcade style games.
That means asset swaps. Personally, I have no problem with this unless the developer behind the port is attempting to sell the release.
So far, I am unaware of how Midnight Wanderers will be released.
What do you think about these asset-based ports? Let me know in the comments below.
