The person behind the amazing Shinobi arcade to Neo Geo port is back with their next port, Golden Axe. If, somehow, you do not know about Golden Axe, it is a classic fantasy-based brawler title from the glory days of the arcades. Sega were in rare form during this period, creating many amazing titles that would stand the test of time. Hoffman, the developer that is making this magic happen, has even added some improvements to this Golden Axe port.
Bringing Worlds of Magic Home
Neo Geo didn’t have anything like Golden Axe, that I can remember, which means this port stands out even more. Brawlers were popular, at least early on, with the Neo Geo platform, before 1 on 1 fighters took off.
I had a lot of fun playing Mutation Nation at a local Walmart back when they had an arcade in the front of the store on one side. Years before that I would always drop quarters in the Shinobi machine in front of a Safeway in Northern California.
I spent a lot of time rocking arcade machines is what I am trying to say.
Golden Axe is one of those that got away from me, at least in arcades. I never got to enjoy it in its System 16 format which makes this Neo Geo port my first official experience with the arcade version (I did enjoy the Sega Genesis port but understood it was skimped down slightly).
Monumental Task
Over on itch.io Hoffman details a bit of the updates they added. Things like improved samples, challenges they faced in making this port happen, and more.
To say this was a monumental undertaking is probably an understatement. I could not imagine the challenges Hoffman faced making this happen.
Make sure to show them some support on their YouTube channel and on itch.io.
I need a great rom hack of Golden Axe 3!😀
Definitely. Someone needs to make the arcade version work on home consoles because Sega completely missed the mark with that Genesis Golden Axe 3 release.
I like Golden Axe 3. The coop attacks were awesome.
I enjoy the first two quite a bit. My problems with 3 are probably due to the fact I did not have anyone to play with so I had to solo it.
