Lemmings What If for Atari 2600

in Hive Gaming15 hours ago (edited)

Lemmings is one of those game concepts that came along long after the Atari 2600 was realistically done commercially. It is also one of the latest Work in Progress projects from Andrew Davie over on YouTube. What is surprising is just how impressive the demo shown is.

It Is Not Magic, It Is Atari

Seriously, at this point, I think many of these independent developers are actually magicians that decided to hone their craft with the Atari 2600. From the Movie Cart to a port of Mortal Kombat it is just amazing what developers are getting the classic Atari hardware to do.
Then we have Lemmings.

Sure, it is zoomed in, the graphics are blocky, but the idea, the sensibility of Lemmings appears to be there. The essence.

Just a Tech Demo

Before you run off looking for the link to the demo, I want to point out, this is a tech demo. A what if, if you will. The developer states in the description of the video that this is not necessarily intended to continue development.

The limitations of the hardware come to light in the comments section. The playfield would have to be extremely small for this to work on the actual Atari 2600. That could limit how much challenge the final game could feature.

The rest of the information Davie brings up is absolute Greek to me so I will not waste your time trying to act like I understand what they are talking about.

I don’t. That is why I write articles instead of program games.

Now, if you are like me, and are excited to see this progress, then please head over to Andrew Davie’s YouTube channel and show them some support.

We never know what another subscriber, comment, share, like, can mean to people living their dreams.

Update After Posting

Not even a full 24 hours after posting this, Andrew Davies made it official, Lemmings for the Atari 2600 is officially being worked on with intent for release.

Atari 2600 will go on in our gaming souls...

I got a new post by the way.

It definitely will never die as long as one fan remembers it. It was an amazing console that still, somehow, thrives.
