New Atari 7800 Game Bernie and The Tower of Doom Gets Physcial Release

in Hive Gaming6 days ago

I was not aware of Bernie and The Tower of Doom until I saw it pop up on my Facebook feed. The last demo was shared on the AtariAge forums several years ago but what is important is, also on AtariAge, the physical copy is now available. If you wanted to play a new Atari 7800 game or see what a mix of Boulder Dash with a dash of Super Mario Bros 3 could look like, here is your chance.

Combining Classic Games to Make a New Title

Bernie and The Tower of Doom levels are played very much like Boulder Dash while there is an overworld map to move around. I know many games had an overworld map, some before Super Mario Bros 3 but far more gamers remember that from SMB 3 than they do some obscure title by a third-party developer that went out of business after releasing their only game.

There is a hint of Pac-Man too with the way the levels work. Drop through the bottom of the screen and reappear at the top. This is key in completing some of the levels that feature otherwise unreachable platforms you must clear up to continue your journey.

Action Puzzle Fans Rejoice

Bernie and The Tower of Doom feature a cutesy art style that appears safe for the whole family to enjoy. There is a bit of text setting up the game so if playing with younger gamers you may need to explain some of the scenes.

Moving around the levels, using ladders to climb back up, or using the holes in the floor to drop in from the top, you must clear blocks. Jumping on the blocks several times will clear them. Bubbles can be burst so you can drop through the holes they leave in the platforms.

Do not lolly gag around too much, there are roaming enemies that would love to send you back to the title screen.

The scoring in Bernie and The Tower of Doom is interesting. Every attempt, failed or successful, gives you one point. The goal is to finish the game with as few points as possible.

Heading over to AtariAge you can purchase Bernie and The Tower of Doom for your Atari 7800. Physical copies include a box, full color 16-page manual, the game cartridge, and a 10x14 color poster.

As of this writing the price is $60 and is currently listed as a pre-order release shipping in November.

If you prefer just the ROM then head over to MuddyVisions Facebook page and e-mail them, they are offering direct sales only.
