File this under “fans doing things corporations won’t do” as this is exactly what is going on. OpenTESArena is an open-source version of The Elder Scrolls Arena from 1994. OpenTESArena allows fans to take the base game that Bethesda Softworks created and gives power to fans to improve it. Was there something that irked you when playing Arena? Here is your chance to fix it, if you don’t have the skills then join some groups of people that do, and your concern may be addressed. The opportunity with this type of engine is almost endless.
Bethesda Wouldn’t Do It So Fans Are
Over on YouTube, afritz1 is working on a modern engine for The Elder Scrolls Arena. If you are unfamiliar with Arena then maybe you have played one of the sequels, Oblivion, Skyrim, Daggerfall etc.
What is interesting about this work is just how far Afritz1 has gotten. The latest release is 0.17.0 – still quite early in development but chugging along nicely.
Imagine the world of Arena in the hands of modders. Sure the scene will probably never be as big as that of Doom and Quake but imagine the things fans will be able to do here.
Send in the Modders
Along with modern takes on these engines comes modders. This potentially means better graphics, sounds, more quests, etc. The possibilities are almost endless.
Anyone want to take bets on how long before someone attempts to port Skyrim to Arenas engine? I don’t think it will be that long before we see something like that happen.
My dream is someone taking the idea of Alternate Reality The City and Dungeon and porting those and continuing the lineage of that failed franchise. It was planned to be seven releases, all interconnected on computers like the Commodore 64 and Apple IIe.
The closest I have seen to that is The Elder Scrolls series without the interconnectivity.
What role-playing game is your favorite? Mine has to be Alternate Reality the Dungeon – I play my Apple IIe save character from the 80s even today at least a few times a month.
