Phantasy Star II on Commodore Amiga 500 Demo Released

in Hive Gaming2 days ago

Way back in April of 2025, I wrote up a piece on Phantasy Star II being worked on for Commodore Computers. Recently, there has been a demo released for the Commodore Amiga 500 with an aim for the 1 meg of RAM builds. Previous builds were focused on releasing on the A1200 platform.

Sega – We Are Not a Retro Company

Hopefully that statement by Shuji Utsumi, CEO of Sega of America and Europe made in an interview with The Guardian means they will leave fans that are keeping their classics alive alone.

Probably not but I can dream and hope, right?

While that statement was made concerning a potential release of a Dreamcast or Sega Saturn Mini console, it seems to resonate with Sega’s releases. They are not doing compilations though they are keeping select classics alive with remakes and sequels (Streets of Rage 4, an upcoming Shinobi game, etc.).

Going the Other Way with Console and Computer Ports

It was not unheard of in the 80s or 90s to see console games make the jump to computers. It was rare that they were good prior to Windows 95/98 standardizing a lot of things for developers and fans.

When the Commodore Amiga was commercially viable, Sega might have been able to pull off a decent port of Phantasy Star II for it but why? Their focus was consoles, not computers. Also, while Sega were fine licensing out their arcade titles (Shinobi on NES being a big deal), they were much stingier with their console grown releases.

At least until that whole Windows thing and Sega created Sega PC to create ports of Saturn games, as well as original titles (I was a HUGE fan of Flesh Feast myself).

That makes this port of Phantasy Star II by itch.io member, Monoz so interesting.

Yes, there is a demo available now and you can check it out. I personally have hell getting Commodore Amiga stuff running via emulation and do not have a physical machine so I have to watch from afar here.

What games would you like to see ported to the Commodore Amiga? Hardware wise, the A500 was very similar to the Sega Genesis.
