It brings me back good memories 😢. I played this game when I was sick and could not go to middle school. I almost completed it in two days and I really enjoyed myself (the game, not the middle school 🤭.
It is a good game. After not having a Game Boy for a long time I bought one and this game off eBay and had a great time playing it till I ended up losing both (someone stole them from my locker at my day job). I never recovered them, nor the save file I had that was quite deep into the game.
Some day I will buy another copy and see if I can complete this game. The card game is hopelessly complex to me, and there are no players around my age that play so it looks just weird. Lol.
Splinterlands is actually my first taste of Card battles, despite how long Pokemon has existed and the fact that I've known about it for so long. I watched a few episodes of the cartoon while growing up but other than Pikachu, I can't remember anything about it.
The actual game play of the Game Boy version here is more like Zelda (run around) and battles are turn based with the cards used to unlock energy and powers and such.
I have been playing Splinterlands a bit this last week (apparently I bought a starter pack a while back and forgot). I like Splinterlands more myself - easier to understand what is going on and none of this "add energy to do that" type stuff that is rampant in Pokemon Trading Card Game and Magic, and countless other card games.
Actually wish I could find my old cards. Pretty sure there would be one or two worth a pretty penny. also just miss the excitement of opening a new pack. Cards other than MTG still being printed and sold?
I am in central Arkansas and there seems to be a ton of collectible card games being produced. Magic, of course, and Pokemon too. There are a few that are there one day and gone the next and never seen again as well.
Then there are some game stores that stock just about anything that has ever been produced. There are plenty of these CCG releases out there. If you check out Kickstarter and IndieGoGo there are more trying to get funding for at least the first wave.
I wish I still had my first print run Magic cards - had a few hundred of them before I joined the Marines and gave them to a friend.
I am very glad to read this post!
