Roguecraft DX Coming to Evercade Platform

in Hive Gaming5 months ago

Rogue, no not the Marvel X-Men character, the retro game released in 1980 has been the basis for many games over the years. A great foundation to start with. Levels are procedurally generated so you are likely to never play the same game twice. Diablo was originally based on Rogue with the dungeons changing every time you played a new game. Another release based on that classic formula, Roguecraft by Thalamus Digital Publishing, is getting the DX treatment in its upcoming release on the Evercade platform.

Millions of Levels Built In

The key to Rogue, and Rogue-Like, games is the procedurally generated levels. These are never the same between playthroughs. There are reused pieces and such resulting in that “same game” feeling if you play a lot.

For me, it was never a problem. I enjoy replaying classics such as The Legend of Zelda (though I prefer A Link to the Past) and other games that are exactly the same each time I play. At least with Rogue-Like games, it is different layouts to the levels. A hallway to treasure that was here last time I played through is no longer there, now that area is closed off, nothing there or it is an open area full of blood thirsty enemies.

This variety is the key to the success of these style games.

Roguecraft is played from a ¾ overhead view with tile movement being rigid. This could be a turn off for some fans but for others, it gives a bit of tactical feel. Enemies run the gamut of VERY similar to Dungeons and Dragons inspired creatures to original monstrosities wanting your head.

Roguecraft DX for Evercade

Sadly, and this is commonplace with Evercade releases, there is not much information available about what is “DX” here. The original Roguecraft was released on the Commodore Amiga platform, available now on itch.io for about $10. The Evercade release has no price currently, the pre-order page has no pre-order option (it was supposed to begin pre-orders on May 30th, two days ago as of this writing).

The Roguecraft DX trailer only states “new music, new potions, and more…” as the selling point. I wish they would have taken a little more time to show what fans can expect, to entice fans to buy this version instead of, or as a complement to, the original.

Roguecraft is expected to ship in August 2025 so check it out and wait for that pre-order link. You can also grab it on Commodore Amiga right now on itch.io’s website.
