Take the line scrolling from the floor of Street Fighter II and apply it almost everywhere. That is parallax textures in a nutshell. A lot of people are focusing on getting Doom to run on everything while others are working on improving the graphics. Here, we are looking at Doom II which does not receive near the love the original does and that is a shame. Thankfully lack of love by many has not stopped the few from continuing to improve Doom II.
Improving a Classic
My first experience, and where I played it the most, was the PlayStation port (affiliate link) back in the 1990’s. Sadly, my available time to play many games is limited and I have not found time to go back and play Doom or Doom II lately. After viewing these improved textures, I am thinking I need to set aside a few hours one day to revisit these games.
Without messing with the core gameplay, the options for improving Doom II are limited. The textures are a place that do not receive a lot of love in working on these classics. As you can see by the embedded video, we need more of this style update to classics. Could you imagine this parallax texture applied to Super Mario Bros? It would have an almost 2.5D style look.
What, Where, How
Fans that want to give this hack a play through can do so quite easily. Over on ModDB.com you can grab the necessary files, they are about 12 megs. Very small file size, honestly.
Please note you will need GZDoom 4.1 or newer and follow the instructions on MoDDB to get Voxel Doom II running. In the comments over there, some have pointed out you need to be using Vulkan or OpenGL not OpenGL ES to make the textures display correctly.
Seriously, this is stupid impressive and I hope we see more improvements like this. Do we have any Doom fans reading this? Which Doom entry, or first-person shooter in general, are you rocking? Let me know in the comments.
How interesting dude, the game's graphics looks more refined. Thanks for sharing this info.
You are welcome. I enjoy these things a lot and getting to share them with others make them even more fun and entertaining to learn about.
