Tomato plants of 2024 and a tomato color comedy /

Today it was cloudy and not that warm in the morning, so I decided to move the tomatoes that germinated to a cell tray.

The seeds were planted 9 days ago, and 5 days ago they still looked like the picture below, so how quickly they have grown in a short period of time. It is truly the power of spring.

This year in February, I failed to sow the first round of chili peppers. I sow seeds on wet kitchen paper as always but they didn't germinate. It seemed to be caused by the new kitchen paper I started to use recently, so I spread tomato seeds on a terracotta tray with soil for seedlings made fine with a colander and waited for them to germinate.

I did not want to use soil in the house, but luckily it worked well without mold or insects, which I had afraid of. The fine texture of the soil was effective, and all the sprouts came out immediately when I gently pulled them.

Tomatoes can be planted deep because the roots come out of the stem. Every time I remember my favorite gardener on YouTube said "Tomatoes are forgiving plants". Yes, they are generously forgiving even if they get a little too long.

Transplanting the baby plants were very smooth. I will bring them next week to my office where the peppers are waiting. The cell tray with a handle is really useful, which Violas came in.

........ In the end I found a problem. There were few red tomatoes among the varieties I chose this time, and the germination was inconsistent among the varieties, so I now I have 4 yellow, 3 black, and 1 green tomato plants 😅 I wanted some read ones and a backup for the green zebra tomatoes that my daughter is looking forward to, so I sowed some more. And ... I remembered that my daughter wanted a purple one too 😂 It's like a comedy. I don't know if I should sow more.

So now I'm about to go out to a park with my daughter to get some sand to grow oyster-flavored plants.

Have a nice Easter holidays everyone!

Wow, this is something new to me. you germinated the seeds in a tray with only 1 inch of soil mix. soon after cotyledon, you moved the seedlings to a cell tray, which is again a tiny cup. Meaning, you will move them one more time after they grow a little more?

Don't you think that moving the plants repeatedly can damage those tiny roots and may disturb their growth??

I have seen some people doing three times transplanting (germination->cell->pot->final position). I may skip potting when it warm this spring but it’s a gamble. I do this mainly because I have limited space and amount of seeds (10 seeds in a pack for rare varieties … ) 😅 If I have plenty of both, I think I start from cell tray and thin out plants. At least it works fine for me for the last years but I must do AB test 😊
