Hello dear Hivers and Nature lovers, I hope the weekend has been good on your side ! Here, everything went perfectly, the batteries are recharged and it's time to get back to work in the shared gardens that I joined almost a year ago. I would even say that I am almost late, well almost because if I act quickly, efficiently - and with good weather - we could catch up.
In these shared gardens in the French capital I garden in collaboration with a friend I met when I arrived. At the time we had plots, but due to the risk of landslides, we lost access to them. That's why we settled on a free corner, a high parapet with a good southern exposure.
The project is now multiple:
- Refurbish the pots we already have
- Build a small greenhouse, or some kind of solar collector
- Probably install a small mound with the resources we will find.
For those of you who read me regularly, you will have understood that this is not our project in the countryside. The purchase is still in progress and should be ready by the beginning of June. I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm already trying to plan various things in advance :)
But let's start this visit of these long gardens in the north of Paris ! Let's take it easy with a little inventory of the flowers that are popping up at the moment and the other plants that are developing...
As far as succulents are concerned, they have nothing to complain about. It rained a lot in March and the weather has been very nice since April, so everything is fine and succulents are not really the most complicated plants to grow.
The lilac is booming and spreading its invigorating aromas as we pass by. The noble laurel, for its part, is displaying its new leaves of the year, all of a tender green that delights us.
These are some of @dswigle's favorite specimens to be found in the gardens. All these tulips have bloomed at the same time, but as they are fragile flowers, most of them are already wilting and I have to admit that I have spent more time observing them and just reading next to them than actually being active in the garden.
You can't be everywhere and the energy you put in one place you can't put elsewhere without abandoning the action you were in before.
This is obvious of course, but it remains a rule that governs our lives in an immutable way and that it is good to keep in mind !
Here we have a beautiful wild apple tree that produces very small apples but they are quite sweet and sour at the same time. To tell you the truth, the fact that we are in the city and that the air, water and land are relatively polluted, does not commit me to consuming many of the things we produce. Let's just say that we do this mostly to practice, to observe and to see how to act accordingly.

A large part of this area is covered by a wisteria which has covered itself with its first leaves in the last ten days and in some places the new clusters of these beautiful, tasty and fragrant flowers can already be seen.
Another thing I have always admired and appreciated about wisteria is the profusion of trunks and the power of each one. I know that some people don't like the fact that this plant can attack their metal bower... but that's exactly what I love ! Seeing the symbiosis and the balance of power between a man-made metal and the power of a plant :)
However, the wisteria does not yet cover us with its shade and we sometimes have to "hide" from the sun's rays under this scarlet parasol. About the same color as my skin would be if I didn't take enough shelter ^^ !
But let's move on to the area we are actually growing...
As you can see, we have not been very gentle and have allowed a small jungle of grasses and other fast growing plants to take hold without weeding... Now we need to get some order in there !
But the little apple blossom draws me in and almost tells me to do nothing and watch. She might be right from a certain point of view, but I know what our plan is... and hers.
In the other part, strangely enough, there are far fewer plants that have settled in during our absence. But there will be work to do anyway !
I'm modestly starting this Sunday to weed and to put back the organic matter on the soil of our pots. To tell you the truth, we have an appointment tomorrow to do this together so I'm leaving some (75% ^^) for later...
Another of my tasks on this Sunday afternoon was to saw a large oak beam (10x10cm) that I had found in the street. This piece is 2m50 long and I cut it into four equal sections of about 63cm.
To carry out this mission, I am accompanied by my usual tools but especially by my new Japanese saw that I had not yet tried. To tell you the truth, my previous one had been stolen on a building site.

No, this is not for the greenhouse ^^ !
The idea behind this is to plane the pieces and glue them together to make a huge board that will be a future part of our country kitchen worktop. I've always wanted to have a corner where I could cut directly without needing an extra board.
We'll see how it turns out, but let's move on to the beginning of my thoughts on creating a small greenhouse.
Here are some ideas quickly drawn... It turns out that my goal is to build this only with materials found in the street and that will only cost me to transport and store them at home or in the gardens.
These two windows for example, I think I found them several months ago and even if I didn't know yet what I would do with them, I knew I would need them !

Bonjour chers Hivers et amoureux de la Nature, j'espère que le weekend a été bon de votre côté ! Ici, tout s'est passé à merveille, les batteries sont rechargées et il est temps de se remettre au travail dans les jardins partagés que j'ai intégrés il y a presque un an. Je dirais même que je suis presque en retard, enfin presque car si j'agit rapidement, avec efficacité - et avec une bonne météo - nous pourrions rattraper notre retard.
Dans ces jardins partagés de la capitale française je jardine en collaboration avec un ami que j'ai rencontré à mon arrivée. À l'époque nous avions des parcelles, mais suite à des risques d'éboulements, nous en avons perdu l'accès. C'est pourquoi nous nous sommes rabattu sur un coin libre, un parapet en hauteur et bien exposé au sud.
Le projet est maintenant multiples :
- Remettre en état les pots que nous avons déjà
- Construire une petite serre, ou une sorte de capteur solaire
- Probablement installer une petite butte avec les ressources que nous trouverons.
Pour ceux d'entre vous qui me lisez régulièrement, vous aurez compris qu'il ne s'agit pas là de notre projet à la campagne. L'achat est toujours en cours et normalement ce sera bon dans le début du mois de juin. Affaire à suivre donc, mais j'essaye déjà de prévoir différentes choses en amont :)
Mais attaquons cette visite de ces jardins tout en longueur du nord de Paris ! On y va doucement avec un petit inventaire des fleurs qui surgissent en ce moment et des autres végétaux qui se développent...
Niveaux plantes grasses, celles-ci n'ont pas à se plaindre. Il a beaucoup plu au mois de mars et il fait aussi très beau depuis avril, tout va bien de ce côté et puis les succulentes ne sont pas vraiment les plantes le plus compliquées à faire pousser.
Le lilas est en plein boom et répand ses arômes enivrants tandis que l'on passe à proximité. De son côté, le laurier noble élance ses nouvelles feuilles de l'année, toutes d'un vert tendre qui nous réjouit.
Voilà quelques uns des spécimens chers à @dswigle que l'on peu trouver dans les jardins. Toutes ces tulipes ont éclos en même temps, mais comme il s'agit de fleurs fragiles, la plupart fanent déjà et je dois avouer que j'ai pour le coup passé plus de temps à les observer et à juste lire à leurs côtés que d'être réellement actif dans le jardin.
On ne peut pas être partout et l'énergie que l'on met à un endroit, on ne peu la mettre ailleurs sans délaisser l'action dans laquelle elle était auparavant.
C'est évident bien sûr, mais pour autant cela reste une règle qui régit nos existences de façon immuable et qu'il est bon d'avoir à l'esprit !
Ici, nous avons un très beau pommer sauvage qui donne de toutes petites pommes mais qui sont assez sucrées et acides à la fois. Pour tout vous dire, le fait que nous soyons en ville et que l'air, l'eau et la terre soient relativement pollués, tout cela ne m'engage pas à consommer beaucoup de choses que nous produisons. On va dire que nous faisons surtout cela pour nous exercer, observer et voir comment agir en conséquence.
Là nous sommes dans la zone la plus loin de l'endroit où nous cultivons, ce qu'i n'empêche que nous y passons beaucoup de temps à discuter et à échafauder nos plans !
Une grande partie de cet endroit est recouvert d'une glycine qui s'est couverte de ses première feuilles dans les dix derniers jours et on voit par endroits déjà apparaître les nouvelles grappes de ces fleurs si belles, goûteuses et odorantes.
Une autre de ces choses que j'ai toujours admiré et apprécié avec les glycines, c'est la profusion de troncs et la puissance de chacun. Je sais que certains apprécient peu que cette plante puisse attaquer leur tonnelle en métal... mais moi c'est justement ce que j'adore ! Voir la symbiose et le rapport de force entre un métal formé par l'homme et la puissance d'un végétal :)
Pour autant, la glycine ne nous recouvre pas encore de son ombre et nous devons parfois nous "cacher" des rayons du soleil sous ce parasol rouge écarlate. À peu près la même couleur que prendrais ma peau si je ne m'abritais pas assez ^^ !
Mais passons à la zone que nous cultivons à proprement parler...
Comme vous pouvez le voir, nous n'avons pas été très tendres et nous avons laissé une petite jungle de graminées et d'autres plantes à croissances rapides s'installer sans désherber... Maintenant, il faut que nous remettions un peu d'ordre là dedans !
Mais la petite fleur de pommier m'attire et me souffle presque de ne rien faire et d'observer. Elle pourrait avoir raison d'un certain point de vue, mais je sais quel est notre plan... et le sien.
Dans l'autre partie, étrangement, il y a beaucoup moins de plantes qui se sont installés durant notre absence. Mais il y aura du travail quoiqu'il en soit !
Je commence modestement ce dimanche à désherber et à remettre la matière organique sur la terre de nos pots. Pour tout vous dire, nous avons rendez-vous demain pour faire cela à deux et j'en donc laisse un peu (75% ^^) pour plus tard...
Une autre de mes missions de cet après-midi dominical aura été de scier une grande poutre en chêne assez épaisse (10x10cm) et que j'avais trouvée dans la rue. Ce morceau fait 2m50 et je le découpe en quatre sections égales d'environs 63cm.
Pour mener à bien cette mission, je suis accompagné de mes outils habituels mais surtout de ma nouvelle scie japonaise que je n'avais toujours pas essayée. Pour tout vous dire, on m'avais volé la précédente sur un chantier.

Non, tout cela n'est pas pour la serre ^^ !
L'idée derrière tout cela est de raboter les morceaux et de les coller pour obtenir une énorme planche qui sera une future partie du plan de travail de notre cuisine à la campagne. En effet, j'ai toujours voulu avoir un coin où je pourrais couper directement sans avoir besoin d'une planche supplémentaire.
On verra ce que cela donnera, mais passons aux débuts de ma réflexion quand à la création d'une petite serre.
Voilà quelques idées rapidement dessinées... Il se trouve que mon objectif est de construire cela qu'avec des matériaux trouvés dans la rue et qui ne m'auront donc coûtés que le fait de les transporter et de les stocker chez moi ou dans les jardins.
Ces deux vitres par exemple, je pense les avoir trouvées il y a plusieurs mois et même si je ne savais pas encore ce que j'en ferrai, je savais que j'en aurais besoin !

Comme vous l'aurez compris, cet épisode du mois consacré à nos activités dans ces jardins urbains n'est que le premier d'une série dont la fréquence fluctuera au gré de nos avancés. Mais j'espère tout de même que cet article là vous aura déjà plût et intéressé :)

I like to idea of adding a space on the counter for cutting. I'd suggest adding a in counter bin as well, with the lid in the counter top! It will make prepping so much easier/ cleaner.
