Extreme sun radiation burn

in HiveGarden9 months ago

The other day I noticed an extreme case of sun radiation burn that I wish to share here.
notice how the leaves are bleached / faded from direct exposure and only at the bottom there is a line of normal leaf green.
I have never seen anything just like that even though we are dealing with radiation damage every year between mid May and the end of August.
daily radiation usually peak at around 14:00 with levels occasionally reaching 11 SPF.

it appears that the stick marking this small tree shaded over the leaf at that time and the rest, being exposed all suffered the burn.

This last photo shows the angle the sun was coming in when this happened. it could mistakingly look like the stick is shading over the leaf in the photo.

this is just one of the challenges we face in our harsh climate when it comes to establishing young trees. older trees learn to fend better after the first year as is the case with Pecans for example. they suffer immensely the first year and are totally fine afterwords.

you can read more about sun radiation damage in trees in my previous post: Sun radiation damage in trees

The heat is a real worry for you guys. We're kinda used to it here but now El Nina has passed I'm worried it'll be worse than ever.

we are used to it here too. high fourties are normal here. actually this year we haven´t reached 40 degrees not even once. it isn´t really heat, but rather the radiation.
and it only becomes a problem once you try working with plants. (or stay in the sun ; ) )
climate is cyclical we just see little portion of it in a human life span..
