HI folks,
@Riverflows asked me to do a text version of my video posts so she can read them :-) rather than watching videos. I was going to do this anyway for those that want to "flick through" rather than watch a long video. Please follow my blog if you want to see the longer videos as i document our progress.
Basically i'm trying to do a post a week updating the progress. Sometimes a vlog and sometimes text, sometimes both. Basically we are really trying to document our progress.
If you HAVE watched the video then this is mostly the same information as is in the video.
Today I will take you on a little tour of the spaces
Walk around the new chicken coop (Painting phase)
the new hanging baskets
The new pots
The NEW POO - Horse poo amazement
Trying to stop the mess in the porch
ha ah
So for those of you that know this... skip to the May Update section.
We have been in this house for 6 years now and it is a concrete wastleland of concrete and grass with a pool. we decided that this needs to change and are creating a little urban farm in.
We had a very GREEN back garden but it was just yukka plants. AND they planted this big rooted trees right on top of retaining walls. They are huge and are pushing on the walls. They needed to come out. Roots and all down into the earth we had to go...
You can see here the view when we moved in.,... green... but not "pretty and productive.."
Certainly no biodiversity. Not good for bees. Just green yick.
What are we creating
We are trying to create a little mini urban farm.
Fruit and vegetables
Chickens
worms
mealworms
flowers
bees
bee haven
biodiversity
pesticide free where possible
native plants as well. So not JUST food but also food for the insects that will live in the garden.
As i was saying above, we want to create a whole space and document the trials and sucesses.
Please follow our journey.
ok so here is the actual update for the month
This is the second May update
Chicken coop
So we have been really smashing it out in the chicken coop this last couple of weeks
Below you can see the framing all complete.
Below is the painting stage
We had to take the roof bits off to paint, and paint all the panels for the siding. To help weather proof them. They are all ready to go.
**Today @Azthal is enamel painting the outer framing which will be seen. The panels are going inside so you will see the gloss white framing. We need to pick a colour for the panels. Its likely to be a blue colour.
Drama
We had some drama with the rain as we had a rainstorm while the framing was 1/2 up... not ideal really... but nothing we can do about that.
You can see the nesting boxes at the back. The face closest to camera has the "people acess door" and Chris is standing next to the little chicken door. This is where the run will extend from.
Underneath will be enclosed with mesh and accessed from the side where Chris is standing. Here will be the dust bath area. Also lots of shade here for the chickens.
We will be putting flower pots and things in as well for them to scratch around in. These we will make to come in and out so they can regrow.
The hanging Baskets
So the two on the far right you have seen, Mother's day gifts. But the others are new. All have pansies or a violet in, but the last two have hanging peas in. See how we go with those. Its an experiment.
The new Pots
We planted quite a few things in the pots over the last couple of weeks.
The back beds
so mostly this was a poo story...
Concluding messages
busy week.. all gone to poop with the big storm.... but we will get through that... Next video/post i will show you the damage from that. thankfully i was home to move what i could. Nothing saved the fence... but at least the tree didn't fall into the shed solar system.
talk later
happy gardening
We saw some horse poop advertised on FB about 20 mins drive away.
they were HUGE bags and when we got there they were teeming with compost worms. Just totally full of them. Even had i paid the same amount for a bag-o-worms from the store i dont think i would have got so many. It was definitely worth it.
We need to fill the back beds quickly and cheaply. So we are layering these big bags of poop, with some soil, sugarcane, more poop and keep going. The poo is well rotted down and not heating up much which is good. The last step will be to add the compost on the top with some quality soil and get planting... but not yet.
One of the beds we were testing by growing some peas. Its a shame its not THESE ones with all the poop in... ah well.
Anyway thanks so much for stopping along and reading my posts I am just loving my HIVE experience so far. Such a fun platform for sure.
For those that don't know my i'm currently focusing on Daily painting and somewhat amusing my self and my family with Acrylic pouring.. lol.. i wish i had a separate studio for that as it is so messy.
My other HIVE interests are:

sunset photography (i take photos of the sky every night)
Art
Graphic Design
Gardening (just a smidgion)
Ballet
Sewing - I make Tutus and ballet costumes too...
Here are a couple of snaps of some of the stuff i do outside what you see up in the posts above.
OMG wow - as someone who's followed your progress, it's sooo impressive to see how far things have come!!! Amazing! The chicken coop looks great. Everything looks so neat and tidy after the storms and your design is working well - you still have space around the pool and plenty of tubs for your food! Wow! You'll be running courses for the neighbours next! Can't wait to see the arrival of the chooks!
awwww thanks love,
can't wait for Spring aug - october will be exciting times here i think..
we will be getting the fruit trees soon too. In tubs... also around the pool.. lots of citrus trees
Need to finish the coop!!!! if it stops raining and stops stormign that is!
I'm lost for words, your place and what you have done with the space is remarkable. So much going on and everything as neat as a pin.
The chicken coup looks like the the real deal, the chickens will be staying at a four star resort. Great craftsmanship and design.
Entertaining stuff, thanks.
Thanks so much.
yes it is a BIG job getting it all done. So much yet to do as well. its been a fun journey though.
thanks for stopping by!
Sarah
You're doing really well there! I might think of moving into your chook coop - it looks better built than some hotels I've stayed in!
yes we call it the chicken palace... it will have electric doors and a fan and a window and a flower box... super fancy !!!!
thanks for stopping by!!!
Wow! those are some lucky chooks!
!luv
@blingit, @ligayagardener(1/1) sent you LUV. wallet | market | tools | discord | community | daily
the sheeting is going on the outside of the frame. The paint is to protect the frame from the environment and the poop. The outside will then be framed with yet more wood...this will give further strength but also an aesthetic appeal...
well you are not clear in your descriptions... lol.... why are you using gloss paint then... lol. Does that mean yo need to reframe the door s and windows again... lol...
thats what the trim will be for
Really amazing place! I really love what you did with the coop, what a smart and ingenious design!
I envy that chicken coop, makes me want to create my own (^_^)
Wow, that is very unique. I like the chicken palace.
