the House of Healing 🌿

What if we all spent less time worrying, and more time healing?

What if instead of spending money on supplements, we spent time tending to a healing outdoor space?

I am lucky to have access to a healing space pretty much anywhere I go. Most towns have parks, most rural areas have trails, and my relative's home has a small garden that I have been helping out in for years.

Would you like to check it out?

Mostly, there are potted herbs that are surrounded by landscaping plants. This one above is called Epazote in Mexico or, Paico in Argentina. It is great for adding to beans and other hard-to-digest foods. Personally I tend to just eat a leaf every time I pass by to help my digestive system get used to the different diet I have while traveling.

And then, Shiso which is also known as Perilla. I would describe this herb as basil-y and also mint-y too. It is in fact a member of the mint family and comes from Japan. More & more I see this used as a culinary herb. And while it can't really survive the intense heat of the California summer under normal conditions, it has done really well in this shady, well watered spot.

And then there is Lemon Balm a wonderful herb for summertime drinks. I love the scent of this uplifting herb and that year after year it re-seeds itself in this mini herb garden.

Sitting out here and tending to the plants is truly my happy place. All around me are the sounds of traffic, dogs barking, air conditioning systems kicking on ... you know, lots of hustle & bustle that I am not used to.

Here in this little shady herb garden, those stressors fade away thanks to the healing powers of herbs.

I love how you turned simple herb garden into a healing space. Spending time with plants is sometimes the best medicine for stress. 🌿

I so agree! thank you

It’s great that you found a shady, well watered spot where Shiso can grow even in hot California and it’s interesting how Epazote can help with digestion.

I am thankful to my mom who waters & takes care of this garden when I am away!
