Maize, also known as corn is one of the most important cereal crops grown worldwide. It serves as a staple food for millions of people and also provides raw materials for industries and livestock feed. In many African countries including Nigeria, maize is widely cultivated because it grows well in different soil types and climates.
The first step in maize farming is land preparation. The land should be cleared of weeds and debris, then ploughed to loosen the soil. Good soil preparation helps the maize roots penetrates deeply and improves water retention. While the second step is planting, maize is usually planted at the beginning of rainy season.
Here are some growth stage in cultivation of maize
i Germination: the seed sprouts within days after planting.
ii Vegetable stage: the plant develops leaves and strengthen it's roots.
iii Reproductive stage: flowering begins with tassels and silks appearing.
iv Maturity: the cobs develop and grains harden ready for harvest.
Maize 🌽 is always ready for harvest about 3-4 months after planting, depending on the variety. Maize also supports animal husbandry and industrial production, making it one of the most valuable crops in agriculture.
