Seeds of Summer: Tips and Tricks for Growing Watermelon Seedlings

in HiveGardenlast year
Now is the ideal time to plant watermelon, and I have some useful tips for planting it, especially in the Middle East, where the climate can be extremely hot.

I've been preparing for this for a while now, but the fence for the watermelon to climb on isn't ready yet. I still have a full week to finish building the watermelon fence before they are fully grown and need to be moved.

Here is the TIPS:

1. Choose the Right Time: Watermelons require warm soil and plenty of sunlight to grow. The best time to plant watermelon seeds in the Middle East is in the early spring when the temperatures are consistently above 60°F (15°C).

2. Prepare the Soil: Watermelons grow best in well-draining, sandy soil. Before planting, loosen the soil to a depth of at least 12 inches (30 cm) and add organic matter such as compost or aged manure to improve soil fertility.

3. Plant the Seeds: Sow the seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep in rows spaced 6 feet (1.8 m) apart. Watermelons require a lot of space to grow, so leave at least 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 m) between each plant.

4. Watering: Watermelons need regular watering, especially during dry periods. Provide at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water per week. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause the fruit to split.

5. Fertilizing: Watermelons are heavy feeders and require regular fertilization. Apply a balanced fertilizer with a ratio of 10-10-10 every two weeks during the growing season.

6. Pest and Disease Control: Watermelons are vulnerable to a variety of pests and diseases. Monitor your plants regularly and take action at the first sign of a problem. Organic pest control methods such as neem oil and insecticidal soap can be effective.

7. Harvesting: Watermelons are ready to harvest when the underside of the fruit turns yellow and the stem begins to dry out. To test for ripeness, give the fruit a thump – a ripe watermelon will have a deep, hollow sound. Cut the fruit from the vine with a sharp knife, leaving a few inches of stem attached.

With these steps, you can successfully grow watermelons from seeds here in the Middle East. I hope these tips will be useful in hot climates like here in the Middle East. ^_^

Melons do love the heat! I'd think they go crazy in the middle east.

Great tips! I have quite a few melons going this season. Also I am curious on what program you used to make your first picture in this post?
