Rearing rabbit is not something common in our community. It's something a lot of people do not have the expertise real them so it's only few people who have deep interest take go into rearing them.
In rearing rabbit one has to get a deeper understanding of their life cycle so that necessary practices will be offered to them.
One does not need a large infrastructure to start rearing rabbit rather a fairly small coop can house them.
The type of rabbit one wants to real determines the kind of hutch you will need for a rearing. Each breeding rabbit needs its own hutch, or for those that will be rear for meat too also needs it different apartment.
As I visited my friend Sir Evans he had prepared a very small coop which was housing about ten of his rabbit with each of them having it's own compartment.
Because I have some interest in rearing rabbit I took the opportunity to ask him where to start the process. He gave me a lot of tutorials as to how it should be started, the kind of coop I should prepare and their separate divisions.
He took me through the daily routine as how to properly take care of them as in thier feeding and the kind of a food that are given to them. He said that rabbits like leaves so much some grass and milk dunk are there two common plants that can be used to feed them. Additionally he said you can also test them by giving them variety of food so if you identify which one they like then adopte and added to the grass and the milk dunk.
Sir Evans also took me round his plantain and cocoyam farm around his house and how it was helping him feed his family. Mr Evans has a large compound and has taken the opportunity to grow a lot of plantain and some cocoyam together with cassava which he is benefiting him soo much. He also rear other animals like goats and some poultry too.
The rabbits look so cute and healthy. It is true that rabbit rearing isn't common here in Ghana due to peculiar reasons like the animals being taboo in some communities, tribes and religion. Since their domestication, even though their meats contain high amount of protein to fat ratio which is good for the body, yet few communities rear them for commercial basis. I know with time, many people will accept and rear in large quantities if the education is intensified.
