The Fruits Of A Garden

If you live in the countryside and have a garden or field, you know what a blessing it is to have your own vegetables and fruits. It is not easy, of course, to grow different types of plants, but certainly, when they bear fruit, happiness has no end. The proverb says, what you sow, you reap, although it can be applied to other human values, here I would like to emphasize the literal meaning of it. If you planted good seeds on time and worked on growing and preserving the plants, now is the time to enjoy the fruits.

So, this summer I found myself in my old, German-style house, with a large garden. Actually, two of them. The front garden, as we call it, surrounds the house and the back garden extends to a canal that was previously used for irrigation. Now that canal is closed, and no longer serves its purpose. There are fruits and vegetables in both gardens, which are mostly starting to ripen now.

The first thing that ripened were apricots. In this picture, they were no fully mature, but now - they are gone. Unfortunately, one species of beetle also likes apricots, so some fruits have already been attacked by them.

There is one Cornus mas (Cornelian cherry) tree in the back garden.
The fruits ripen from July to mid-October, and as you can see in the photo they already have nice colour. Almost ripe all. They are rich in vitamin C, tannins and pectin. It has a beneficial effect on the digestive system, although you have to like the specific acidic flavour of the fruit to enjoy them. They can be used in fresh form or can be prepared as a tea or other medicinal preparations and used for the treatment of sore throat, anaemia, kidney disease, diabetes or even wound healing.

Many plum trees are planted in both gardens. They are so delicious and sweet, I love them. It is typical for this region to prepare homemade plum brandy, which is a typical type of strong alcoholic drink. But also jam is made from them, but as I already mentioned, I like to consume them as fresh fruits. They are rich in fibre and vitamins, and the taste is a real treat.

The pears are not yet ripe, they still need a few weeks to be good to use. They have a similar purpose as plums, they can be used fresh, for brandy or jam. I love them, but not as much as plums.

However, what I really love are figs. Figs mostly grow in the Mediterranean area, but some trees have succeeded here as well. During the winter, the tree should be protected from the cold, because otherwise, it freezes. This happened one winter, and since then special care has been taken to protect the trees in the cold months. Look at this fig, doesn't it give a sweet feeling over the picture? Ok, I will have to try it and let you know. Yum. It was a tasty, sweet one!

In this point, I have not yet "harvested" all those sweet fruits that can be found in the garden where I am currently staying. Do you like watermelons? Here, we have three of them. Two are still small and one has started to grow nicely. If you love this fruit so much as I, and you have a garden, you can try to plant it. It is not so demanding, but it requires a large amount of water for growth and development. You can plant it from seeds or from seedlings that are placed in pre-prepared pits. You need to pour water into them to create mud and then, after placing the seedling, cover well with soil. It is best to do it at the beginning of May without risking the appearance of late spring frosts (we are talking about the continental climate). I am looking forward to trying it when it will be ripe.

Okay, no more sweet fruits, but there are vegetables. The texture and taste of home-grown tomatoes and cucumbers cannot be compared to any purchased one. In the first pictures, the tomato is still green, but it was photogenic so it comes in this post. Now a larger quantity of tomatoes ripens every day, it is so good that I can't explain it to you.

This beautiful yellow flower is a cucumber flower. The cucumber tree is creeping and branched, so it is desirable to place a net or something with which the plant could climb. Sometimes it reaches a length of 3 meters. These of ours are maybe about 2 feet tall, and we have a lot of fruit on it. The root is shallow and does not require much soil, but you must take care of regular watering.

Furthermore, we also have potatoes that were planted in March by our family members. At a depth of about ten cm, the tubers are planted, and covered with a layer of soil. I hope that the fruits, ie the tubers, will be good, because we recently had a flooded garden due to heavy rains. I hope they were not harmed by that excessive amount of water.

This is horseradish. More precisely, only the leaves, because horseradish is underground. Horseradish was originally used as a medicinal plant. Today it is used as a side dish with some dishes and in protection against colds. If you are sensitive, be prepared because its enzymes, when cut or grated, spread a strong odour, which causes tears :)

In my opinion, this is a real blessing to have this garden. Since I am not here during the year, it is cultivated and kept by relatives, but now we all enjoy the fruits together. And not just us, but some guests too. This little hedgehog visited us. He was cute and he wasn’t afraid of us. I guess he enjoyed this garden too. Unfortunately, there are mosquitoes too, and they are a frequent guest, but I guess not everything can be perfect, can it?

Thank you @ewkaw 💓🙌

Well that's a very rich garden indeed and from July till mid October is a nice time to enjoy those fruits.
Melons in hot weather are the best.

Enjoy the fruits of your labor (literally and figuratively 🙃).

I am enjoying, indeed in all those fruits, however, the main labour was done by family, we just came in right time @tanjakolader ;D

Hahaha I know what that's like. My partner does most of the work. I only need to water, keep and observe the plants and trees.

You should have one more task: enjoy the taste of the fruits 😋
:D

LOL, yes we've enjoyed the tomatoes and the peppers. All kinds of peppers and the vegetables. The trees take years though, before they start giving fruits, but will definitely enjoy them when the time comes.

All those plants and fruits make me hungry! Yes, mosquitoes are a problem, but the benefits are quite abundant. Those tomatoes look awesome. You can make some green fried ones. They are delicious like that. And those cherries look like I could give them a try. I love citric fruits. I'm also kinda allergic to them, but a few sneezes have never stopped me from trying new fruits.

Those Cornelian cherries are really bitter and sour, I am not sure you would like it , and of course, the allergy thing. But, at the other side, they are healthy, so I could send some of them :)))

I bet you could make some sweets out of it. Passion fruit is also really sour and we make juice and jams and cakes with it.

Yes, kind of sweet jam can be made of it! 👌

That's good enough for me! I like jam and making it too! 😄

Thank you @rozku 🍒🍉🥭🍐🍅🥒🍓

It is interesting to be able to observe the origin and birth of fruits that we consume every day, I think these are things that we normally do not pay attention to. Thanks for sharing such beautiful photos, take care.

Thank you for taking this tour through my garden :) It is interesting, yes, and tasty too :)
Besos :)

The fruit trees are really lovely! Plums are probably my favorite of the fruits. We planted 2 plum trees in the yard 7 years ago, this year is the first year that one of the trees has been holding on to the plums long enough for them to start to get ripe.

Plums are so tasty, indeed. These plum trees started to bring fruits when they were 3 years old, maybe depends on climate.

Enjoy your ones 👌😊

We also have dogwood, watermelons 🍉, plums, tomatoes🍅 and cucumbers🥒! I would like to live where there is fruit because we do not have it.

Oh, so you have veggies and fruits too @darine.darine , that is great. The taste of the home grown tomatoes is priceless, right? I love it!

Sorry for the delayed response 🤗

The taste of homemade tomatoes is really priceless! Recently, Grandpa brought the first tomato from his garden!

🍅🍅🍅🍅
That is great! I imagine you enjoyed in that tomato 🍅😃

Yes, it's true!
