What a pleasant day, Hivers! For today’s blog, I want to take you on a little journey with me, a journey through the world of a plantita. Have you ever heard the Greek proverb: “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in”? Well, I truly believe in it. Sometimes, our passion for planting doesn’t come with the idea of benefiting from it or expecting something in return. It’s not about what we gain, but about giving life to nature, helping it thrive, and finding joy in the simple act of nurturing something that will grow, even without immediate reward.

So, let me take you through a small glimpse of my normal day as a plantita.
Earlier this morning, I hurried outside to prepare seeds for planting. Today, I planned to plant tomatoes and cucumbers, two of my favorite vegetables to grow at home. This has become part of my routine, especially now that we’re back to modular classes after the earthquake last September. Gardening has become my little escape from the stress of school and the busyness of daily life.

Every morning, I carefully plant my seeds, and I watch them every now and then as tiny sprouts peek out of the soil. Sometimes, they grow a little slower than I hope, depending on how fertile the soil is or the weather conditions. But nothing makes me happier than seeing them progress, day by day. Even though we can’t rush nature, there’s something magical about witnessing growth at its own pace. It’s a gentle reminder that some things in life take time and patience, and that’s okay.
I particularly enjoy planting chili peppers because I love spicy food. There’s a little thrill in imagining the day when I can pick them fresh and use them in my cooking. It feels like the effort I put in the soil is rewarded in small, delicious ways.

Aside from vegetables, we also planted Imelda roses. My family has always been passionate about gardening. From a young age, my parents nurtured our love for plants, taking time to search for seedlings we didn’t have yet to expand our garden. We’ve always enjoyed ornamental plants, there’s something about their colors, shapes, and delicate beauty that just lifts your spirits.

Interestingly, none of us really think about the potential benefits we might gain from our plants. There’s no hidden agenda of selling them or showing them off. We plant because it brings joy, a quiet sense of accomplishment, and a connection to nature that nothing else can quite replace. There’s a peaceful satisfaction in tending to plants and watching them grow, knowing that even if the results aren’t immediate, the effort contributes to life, beauty, and sometimes even to the environment.

Being a plantita has taught me patience, mindfulness, and gratitude for life’s small blessings. Every sprout, every bloom, every green leaf reminds me that growth is a process and that the effort we put into something meaningful is never wasted. Even if we won’t always sit in the shade we planted, the act of planting itself is its own reward.
So, my dear Hivers, that’s a peek into my day as a plantita, a day filled with soil on my hands and the joy of watching life unfold. Gardening may seem like a simple hobby, but to me, it’s a way of life, a daily lesson in patience, love, and hope. And if you ever get the chance, I highly encourage you to try planting something of your own cuz' you might just find a little happiness sprouting along the way.
