Plant your greens and preserve the planet

in HiveGarden5 months ago

The new year has dawned and many people will have made resolutions that they may follow. Please do add one more to your list if you have one and that is to plant at least one vegetable or fruit sapling and if you do not have space, there is a solution for that too. You can use an empty paint bucket too and fill it with manure and soil in the right proportion. Plant a sapling or seeds. Water it daily and watch your sapling grow.

The onset of natural disasters nowadays and the increasing heat is an indication that man has played foul with nature. It is time to reverse the damage and do a bit to replenish the planet and although we cannot completely reverse the damage, we can still try to avoid using certain things like the ones listed below.

Goals for 2024

  • plant a sapling
  • gift a sapling
  • avoid purchasing stuff in small packets thus removing the plastic garbage to some extent
  • reuse containers that can be used again
  • carry your shopping bags instead of opting for plastic kits
  • dispose of e-waste properly
  • try to group the neighborhood into planting tree saplings in a park so that it will be of great use in the future
  • try not to pollute the land, air, and water
  • report people who are found littering the water bodies and land
  • grow your herbs - Tulsi leaf is a great antidote for coughs and colds
  • try to make more home-cooked meals
  • do not buy the packet of chips - loaded with preservatives and chemicals besides salt
  • you can grow ginger and turmeric in an unused paint bucket too - you can be sure it is organic
  • coconut milk powder available in stores may not be pure - why not buy a fresh coconut and extract the milk yourself? Scrape the coconut blend in a mixer and squeeze the juice. You can also treat this milk to make extra virgin coconut oil
  • Try to prepare your spice mix by powdering together cinnamon, black pepper, dried red chilly, jeera, fenugreek seeds, nutmeg, hing, and whatever you like or prefer. Dry fry and powder it and store it in an air-tight container and you can add it to your curries, dips, or soups.
  • Avoid gifting stuff made of plastic to others. Fruits are the best gift and seasonal local fruits should be preferred. No gift is small because it is the thought that matters and not the price.

The above are just some examples of what you can do and no task is small enough that it doesn't matter. If every human tries, then things can change.
There is no time to be complacent about climate change. If we act now, we need not regret it later.

Nature does not give second chances. Landslides, flash floods, tsunamis, extreme summers. All this is now very frequent and changing the planet. We can do our bit by reducing the carbon footprint.

I hope you will be able to plant a sapling this year. Do write about it on hive and link the post here.

Hmm...these all are must things for our better life n future... I'll also try to adopt these things :-)

Thank you so much

These are some very interesting ways to take care of our environment. I like most of these example especially because they involve planting. However, one of the examples I plan to inculcate this year, is carrying my own basket for shopping to avoid stacking up so many nylon bags.

Thank you, @sayee, for these recommendations to start with an optimal environmental vision for the defence of the world where I live. 💚

I completely agree with your post and fully support this initiative. In fact, I'm trying to follow this path myself by integrating sustainable practices into my daily life. 🙏

In addition to your suggestions, I would like to add a few more ideas:

  • Home Composting: Create a home compost bin to recycle organic waste. This reduces the waste sent to landfills and provides excellent soil amendment.
  • Rainwater Harvesting: Install rainwater harvesting systems to water gardens and plants. This helps save water and reduce dependence on treated water.
  • Pollinator-Friendly Planting: Plant flowers and plants that attract bees and other pollinators to improve garden health and support biodiversity.
  • Supporting Local Producers: Buy local and seasonal products to reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transportation.

Every small gesture counts, and if we unite our efforts, we can make a big difference for our planet. I also hope to share my progress and experiences on Hive!

Nature indeed deserves our utmost attention and respect.

I totally agree, we must promote agriculture in a healthy and friendly way with the planet and we can do that from our homes and work spaces, it is about contributing to a green planet from wherever we are.
