Growing a Small Vegetable Garden for our Family's Needs

in HiveGardenlast month

Hello, everyone. Finally, after days of not having an update here in the Hive, got the chance to write again and make this post. I'm sorry things got a little bit crazy and had to fix some work-related issues.

For today's blog, I'm going to share with you how our family's needs were lessened in terms of buying vegetables from the market through planting in our small backyard.

As I mentioned earlier in my blog, I am living in a far-flung area, and some means of living here is farming. And our family is one of them. And because the prices of our usual commodities like vegetables, rice, and fruits rise because of too high inflation rate, my family suggested planting a small amount of vegetables in our backyard.

With the help of my very hardworking parents, I am so lucky to have them around and make ways and means to help our family minimize the budgeting of our daily consumption needs. We decided to plant in our backyard some familiar vegetables such as string beans, lady fingers, eggplant, bell pepper, and bitter gourd.

It was last January when we prepared the land for planting. And on February, my parents started to plant the seedlings. It was not as easy because the land we tilt was not easy to cultivate since it was somewhat rocky and hard. Another challenge faced by my family in planting is water irrigation. As I mentioned in my previous post long ago, we do not have enough water systems in our community, and it's hard for us to water the plants every day. It's already dry season so we will expect less rain coming this time.

Day by day the plants grew healthily, they were making an effort to survive in the daily heat of the sun. Though we didn't have water irrigation, my parents were also making ways to fetch water and moisturize the plants even for a short period. They water the plants and cultivate the soil to make it grow. they visited the garden every day and see to it that it was free from animals that would eat the plants.

One thing that my parents did to protect the plants was to put bamboo twigs around the area so that the goats and chickens would not eat the leaves and scratch the soil around the plants.

And because the string beans and bitter gourd started to climb, my parents placed an artificial pole from the branches of trees. Seeing them growing healthily and starting to bear fruits made us so happy. Efforts were paid off at last!

At present, we are starting to harvest fruits from string beans, bitter gourd, and lady fingers. And from these freshly picked vegetables, my parents will cook right away this delicious vegetable from our garden for the whole family. With the effort of our family, we are ripping the fruits of our labor. From this, we cross-cut the budget allocated for the vegetables from the market.

According to Monty Don, "When you plant something, you invest in a beautiful future amidst a stressful, chaotic, and, at times, downright appalling world." Planting is one way of healing your stressful days. It's about nurturing your inner self and regenerating again to the best that you can be. Ripping the fruits of our labor for our family is worth it.

That's all for today's blog my dear friends. I hope you enjoy reading and make planting an enjoyable habit of yours.

Have a nice day everyone.😊

It's one of my dreams to have a vegetable garden like yours @selflessgem , so I can also freely plant any veggies I want for consumption. Anyway, thank you for sharing!🤗

Good thing, it can surely help the biodiversity. It is also a good thing, because you won't be able to buy veges especially veges are expensive nowadays, you can save.
