I’m sharing my latest digital drawing today, which is my entry for the Frostfall Village Drawing Challenge of @cabalen. The prompt is Luminary Sanctuary
I was going for a cozy, old world look that is muted in color. I used a Victorian inspired theme for the structure. I want this structure to be a quiet, bright spot in a snowy village, maybe a place people leave little notes or wishes as was mentioned in the prompt. I want something that looks like a vintage poster from the same era.
I see the biggest challenge for this prompt to be the stained glass and I am not confident how to pull that one off. I wanted the tower to feel like it’s glowing from the inside through the said glass to achieve that luminary in the dark, cold night. Looking at it now the warm light spilling out from the windows and the lantern felt very welcoming and I think I nailed that part of the prompt. I added the big red bow and the pine bough to make it feel festive, like a true winter sanctuary. It was satisfying detailing the glass windows and the green bough. Drawing scenes like this, even the small, precise details, is a great way to quiet down after a loud week, which is always nice after band practice.

Here are some snapshots of the process:
The bottom half is really easy to draw using symmetry. The spire at the top is a little challenging which is obvious with my crooked line drawing.
I like the color at this stage I could alter revisit this drawing and keep this monochromatic look for future use
The shade of red and green I carefully pick for that old world charm
The most challenging part is how to make the stained glass window look luminous using flat colors. Here it is I never thought that I would achieve this look so happy and probably this is my favorite
The dark night background and the moon with the stars made this look magical and serene I love it.
The snow is not really white to make it look like an old poster
