I think in any sport having a ritual is a must have. We used to have fine meetings after matches and again you could be fined for doing nothing wrong which makes it more fun.

the people involved need to have the right sort of sense of humor. We have had people at the Hash that would get insulted not realizing that nobody actually means what they are saying to you and they would not return for later events. This is fine with us because people that serious would never really work out with our group anyway.

We used to have it in team sports and if you took insults personally you would not fit in and would not enjoy yourself. Obviously it is not meant to be taken personally and normally if you are being teased via insults it is because people actually like you.
