I'm a big fan of street art, especially spray and especially especially when the person who made it clearly had permission to do so.
I don't know if they were taking a page out of the Penang, Malaysia tourism playbook, but there is a part of Da Nang where there are many very creative street art displays on buildings where the people who did it must have had permission to make them, they are too well-done to be some sort of fly-by-night teenagers sneakily painting something without anyone noticing them.
While I can't say for sure what the theme is on these ones that I found, that is part of the fun of street art, it isn't supposed to be evident what it is.

I got up close on this one and could tell by the paint streaks that most of this is spray, but some of it is by brush. I think that is fine although I prefer spray. This is a skul of some sort with one crazy eye that may have been added after the fact. This one is cool and nicely done.

With this one I made myself laugh a little bit because when I was riding by on my bicycle I first said "wow, someone made a mural of Urkel from Family Matters"

Then, when I got home I was looking at my photos and quickly realized that this is Spike Lee, not Urkel. I don't know exactly what it is from, perhaps "Do the Right Thing."
Upon looking closely at this one it is almost entirely spray, and therefore one of my more preferred ones in this neighborhood.

This one is a bit more obvious who it is. Busta Rhymes. And it just occurred to me that we haven't heard much out of that guy in many years. Where is he? He's still alive, isn't he?
There were others in this same little park but most of them were just elaborate tags and I don't have a great deal of appreciation for that.
The entire neighborhood has got spray on the walls and all of it looks as though it was commissioned or at the minimum allowed. If you are a fan of this sort of thing and are in Da Nang you can follow this map location to see them all. The location i have there is a Spa that is in the neighborhood. I'm not plugging that Spa, I have never been there. But if you get to that location you will notice the street art because you will be surrounded by it.
one thing that is a bit of a letdown is that this area, if it was actually their intention that the works on the walls were going to be some sort of attraction, that hasn't ended up being the case. I hope they don't give up on it though, because it is nice to see.
They do look like commissioned pieces and not your normal art work. I just find it odd they do not depict Vietnamese people and it is all foreigners. Do you think they have to fly people in to do these or is there local talent that could do this work? Maybe a reason why foreigners are depicted in the art work because they are not locals.
that's a good point. I found a few in the same neighborhood that have vietnamese depictions. I think that a lot of them are hip hop in nature because that is the predominant culture around most street art globally.
You would think by being original they would stand out more and make a name for themselves.
Very nice paintings. This kinds of paints take a lot of effort and for sure there are stories behind every paint that we see specially in the public places. I very like the first paint that you uploaded, the paint is meaningful but I can't explain it on my own..Have a nice day, I enjoyed reading your blog.
for me the entire point of what makes street art great in most cases is if you have to think a little bit about what the artist is trying to say. This is why I don't really like tags where they just put their name. There's some artistry there sure, but since it is always the same there isn't really anything special going on for the most part.
You're exactly right sir. Sometimes also they would just paint something in the public wall just for fame only specially if got signature on it. There's few in my city.
wow that was very modern art. the message of the art looks very alive. its very colorful and really attracts people passing by.
unfortunately there are not very many people passing by... haha.
I'm not a fan of art but I appreciate it. The work is beautiful, it's obvious that a lot of effort was put into it. As far as I know, every artist has a story behind their work. Have a nice day 😊
Very nice paintings and for sure the artist made really a good plan on doing this painting. Surely this have a meaning and insights about.
Those were very creative and colorful! But yes, I also only admire artists who are allowed to do so in public places like this.
