Walking the famous Dragon Bridge in Da Nang

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITYlast month

There are 7 bridged crossing the sound / river in Da Nang city, Vietnam and they are all pretty impressive. One of them rotates to accommodate boats, the other is a massive, definitely-going-to-die-if-you-jump-off-of-it, suspension bridge, one of them looks like a giant kite lit up at night and the other one is the Dragon bridge. I think it is kind of understood that the Dragon Bridge is the best looking and most inventive one and I like that they decided to do something artistic with it. There are longer and better bridges in the world no doubt, but this is the only one I have ever seen where they went out of their way to make it look awesome.

It appears, because of the cabling that not only is the dragon part of the bridge pleasing to look at, but based on the massive cables extending from it, the dragon must be instrumental in why it works at all.

I like the very large footpaths that are on the side of it as well and dig how they made the railings kind of serpentine as well.

I do find it kind of funny an a bit pathetic how they maintain the bridge though and I can't think of a more inefficient way of working on a bridge of this magnitude than to have metal scaffolding that isn't moveable and must be rebuilt at each stage in the process. It appeared as though they were repainting the bridge and I was kind of alarmed to see the buckets of paint that they were using were just the kind of paint that you can buy for and use on your own house. I would imagine that they have to redo it quite frequently because of this.

You are completely exposed to the sun on this bridge during the day so naturally only foreigners can be spotted actually walking across it during the day. At night this place has a lot more going on on it and it is a major tourist attraction for the city.

on the weekends (Sat/Sun in high season) at 9pm they do a expose of sorts where the dragon spits out fire and water and too many people turn up to see this. I have only been to it one time despite living here for years because there are just way too many people at these events. If you are in town for just a while though I think you should make a point of trying to see it, just don't try and get too close because it is a nightmare for people who don't like crowds. There are a number of places you can view the bridge from including bars and restaurants that are built specifically for this purpose. If you can reserve a table at one of those places you wouldn't have to deal with bumping into so many people.

I complain a lot about how this city is run. I realize that this is an issue that I have with complaining. There are some really great things about this city though and I suppose they are doing better than most developing nations.

I don't need to point out where this is if you are visiting. It is extremely evident and definitely worth seeing.

Sort:

I am sure the pain is necessary to protect the metal from corrosion. The last time I was in Paris they were busy painting the Eiffel Tower which is done every 7 years to protect from rust and takes 3 years to paint. The bridge is not as big a job as that but you would think they would have a better solution because it must also be a regular item that needs painting.

It's completely ridiculous that they have immovable scaffolding to paint this. That has to be like the most inefficient method possible of doing this. I have read that a lot of lower-end jobs in Vietnam are intentionally made low-tech so that they have enough for the low-paid workers to do year-round. This would certainly add credibility to that notion.

Wow the place is truly famous because of the great dragon structures. People will really love to visit the place, Sir.

It's an ok city. I think it is the 2nd or 3rd most visited place in Vietnam for tourists.
