One could argue Covid was designed to speed up this process by knocking off the elderly making the pension go further before they hit problems which they will at some point.
That's a terrible, but obviously quite plausible thing to think.
I remember reading somewhere that most of the pension systems around the world have been bankrupt for a long time already but the politicians are very afraid to touch it because the voting bloc for older people is very strong.
